In a tragic incident that unfolded on Monday in Montreal, three individuals lost their lives, including a beloved police officer and a well-known local businessman. The suspect, a 25-year-old from Alberta, is under investigation for possibly authoring a manifesto that allegedly incited violence against law enforcement.

Victims Identified

The office of the Quebec coroner has confirmed the identities of the deceased. Among them is Seth Scott Hatfield, 25, hailing from Lethbridge, Alberta. The other two victims include Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, who was fatally shot while responding to an emergency call, and Michel Mizrahi, a 68-year-old Israeli citizen. Mizrahi, a prominent figure in the Montreal community, was caught in the crossfire as police engaged with the gunman.

Constable Benredouane was a familiar face in the Côte-des-Neiges area, where he grew up and served his community. Local borough mayor, Stéphanie Valenzuela, praised Benredouane’s dedication, saying, “When you have someone that grew up in the neighbourhood, decided to serve his community in a way that he did, it was an act of heroism that I can’t highlight further.”

Circumstances of the Shooting

The incident began when officers received a 911 call about an armed individual pointing a firearm from a hotel window. Eyewitness accounts indicate that Constable Benredouane and a fellow officer arrived at the Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Midtown, where they faced the suspect, who was heavily armed and dressed in tactical gear. Tragically, Benredouane was killed during the exchange of gunfire.

The Quebec coroner’s office has assigned Martine Lachance to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, with the RCMP confirming that the shooter was indeed from Alberta and had written a manifesto. This document, sent as a bulletin to various police agencies, reportedly encouraged violence against officers, raising concerns about the motivations behind the attack.

Remembering the Victims

Michel Mizrahi, known for his menswear boutique Le Suit Lounge, was described as a community staple. Friends and acquaintances remember him as a kind-hearted individual who was always ready to lend a helping hand. Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen of the MADA Community Centre noted, “Very kind, very gentle, always connected to the community,” highlighting Mizrahi’s generosity and warmth.

Paola Samuel, regional director for Quebec and Atlantic Canada with B’nai Brith Canada, echoed these sentiments, calling Mizrahi “a lovely guy” who brightened the days of those around him. “You just wanted to be around him,” she remarked, reflecting on the profound impact he had on his community.

Constable Benredouane leaves behind a three-year-old child and a partner who is expecting their second child. A fundraiser launched in his honour has begun to gather support, emphasising the loss felt across Quebec for a man regarded as a dedicated officer and a cherished friend.

Ongoing Investigation

The shooting occurred near the headquarters of Aylo, a significant player in the adult entertainment industry, including the operation of Pornhub. The police have been on-site conducting interviews and investigations following the incident. Aylo has expressed its condolences for the victims but has refrained from commenting on the potential connection between the shooter’s manifesto and their business, emphasizing that the investigation is still active.

Why it Matters

This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in an increasingly volatile environment. The loss of Constable Benredouane and Mr. Mizrahi not only highlights the risks that police officers undertake daily but also the profound impact that community figures can have. Their deaths serve as a stark reminder of the importance of community support and vigilance in the face of violence, urging a collective commitment to safety and solidarity.
