After being laid off from his position at Inuit Mailchimp in late 2024, Dover pivoted to substitute teaching while simultaneously honing his understanding of AI. By generating and evaluating AI-produced code, he aimed to bridge the gap between machine assistance and traditional coding practices.

“I realised that understanding AI is crucial,” Dover explained. “I’ve tested its outputs rigorously to identify weaknesses and ensure quality.” His efforts paid off when he secured a new software engineering role focused on AI, demonstrating that an adaptive mindset can lead to new opportunities even in tumultuous times.

The Rise of Collective Action

In the face of uncertainty, many software engineers are turning to collective action as a means of safeguarding their interests. Kaitlin Cort, who left her engineering position to create a resource centre for tech workers, underscores the urgency of this movement. “I saw that the pace at which AI was evolving was outstripping my own skill development, leading to significant anxiety,” she shared.

Cort’s initiative, titled What We Will, aims to assist workers navigating layoffs and the challenges posed by AI. With an increasing number of engineers interested in unionisation, Cort’s centre is responding to a growing demand for support. “In just a few months, I’ve received numerous inquiries about forming unions and organising for better working conditions,” she noted.

The Future is Uncertain

Experts remain divided on the long-term implications of AI for software engineers. While some predict a decline in traditional coding roles, others argue that the ability to evaluate and direct AI-generated code will become increasingly valuable. Bouke Klein Teeselink, an assistant professor at King’s College London, asserts that the profession is evolving, stating, “The skill of writing code may be diminishing, but the ability to effectively use AI tools is where the future lies.”

While the immediate outlook for many engineers may seem bleak, there remains a glimmer of hope. As David Malan from Harvard University points out, the significant financial investments in AI technology suggest that human oversight will still be essential. “AI may augment software engineering, but it won’t entirely replace the need for skilled engineers,” he explained.
