He cites a significant shift beginning around 2000, when IQ scores across the Western world began to fall despite rising educational engagement. “For nearly two centuries, the West experienced steady generational progress,” he asserts. “Each new cohort of children grew up healthier, happier, and better educated than the last. Until now.”
The advent of educational technology, he argues, is at the heart of this decline. In the UK alone, the Department for Education estimates that the edtech market generates approximately £6.5 billion annually, while in the US, it has ballooned into a $400 billion industry that permeates every facet of schooling. Horvath emphasises that this trend is not merely about entertainment but extends to academic learning. “If we want our kids to have deep transferable knowledge in our heads, we must reduce screen use as much as possible,” he insists.
The Pandemic’s Lasting Impact
The integration of laptops into classrooms began earnestly in the early 2010s, but the COVID-19 pandemic marked a pivotal point for digital learning. Many schools adopted online tools as a temporary measure during lockdowns, yet, as Horvath points out, most have not reverted to pre-pandemic methods. Currently, 88% of school districts in the US provide one-to-one computer access to students, a trend similarly reflected in the UK.
Despite the rapid advancement of technology in education, Horvath’s research indicates that it may not enhance learning outcomes. He references data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which shows a correlation between increased screen time and declining academic performance. Students who reported using screens for more than six hours each day scored an average of 66 points lower than their peers who did not use them at all.
Diverging Perspectives on Educational Technology
While Horvath’s claims have sparked significant discussion, not all experts in the field agree with his assessment. Rose Luckin, an emerita professor at the UCL Knowledge Lab, acknowledges some of Horvath’s points but cautions against equating correlation with causation. “Moderate school device use is associated with better results than no school device use,” she notes, suggesting that the heaviest reliance on screens may be where the issues lie.
Daisy Christodoulou, director of education at the educational technology startup No More Marking, expresses a somewhat optimistic view. She believes that while society has historically been dismissive of the potential pitfalls of technology, there is a growing awareness of its impacts. “Screens have not had as significant an impact in classrooms in England as in the US,” she explains, “but we should still consider the implications.”
Similarly, Dylan Wiliam, an emeritus professor of educational assessment at the UCL Institute of Education, highlights the complexity of the issue. He states, “Technology may well be harming student achievement, but the correlational studies we currently have do not support such causal claims. The question we need to be asking is, ‘when does edtech help learning?’ and that answer is complicated.”
