A significant financial boost is on the horizon for Canadian agri-tech startups, with the introduction of a new funding programme aiming to support innovative ventures within the sector. Wittington Ventures, the investment arm associated with the Weston group, has teamed up with U.S.-based Breakthrough Energy Discovery to provide between US$500,000 and US$2 million in early-stage capital for selected applicants. This initiative will focus initially on agriculture and seeks to uplift Canadian research institutions and their groundbreaking ideas.

A Unique Opportunity for Canadian Innovators

The newly launched programme will select two to four candidates from Canadian research institutions, who will join Breakthrough Energy Discovery’s global Fellows programme. Zeeshan Ali, a partner at Wittington Ventures, emphasised the wealth of scientific talent in Canada but noted the common challenge of turning promising research into viable businesses. “Many innovations stall before they can create impact and drive job creation,” he said. “The Weston Breakthrough Fellows programme was designed to bridge that gap.”

This funding initiative is expected to significantly enhance the landscape for ag-tech startups in Canada, particularly at a time when investment in the sector has seen a worrying decline. According to a recent report from the Royal Bank of Canada, the agri-food sector’s share of government-backed growth funds has dwindled to a mere 2 per cent, reflecting a 32 per cent drop in investment value over the past decade.

Spotlight on Success: Advanced Agriscience

One of the success stories emerging from the Breakthrough Energy Discovery programme is Collin Juurakko, who received around US$700,000 in funding in 2025 for his company, Advanced Agriscience. His firm is pioneering solutions that utilise naturally occurring microbes to create bio-pesticides, aimed at helping crops resist frost damage. Juurakko, who holds a PhD in molecular genetics from Queen’s University, faced considerable hurdles in securing early-stage investment, highlighting the scarcity of private investors willing to support agriculture-focused startups in Canada.

Despite the availability of government grants, many require cost-sharing, which can be a barrier for nascent companies. Juurakko noted that investors often prefer to push founders towards larger markets in the U.S., seeking substantial equity stakes in return. “That’s what’s so exciting about this opportunity,” he remarked regarding the Weston fund. “They’re enabling Canadians to build in Canada.”

Building a Sustainable Future for Agri-Tech

In addition to providing essential early-stage capital, the Weston Breakthrough Fellows programme will offer mentorship and networking opportunities to its participants. Ali reiterated the importance of nurturing homegrown businesses in Canada, stating, “We believe Canada has the opportunity to lead in climate innovation. But leadership requires companies to be built here.”

Applications for the inaugural cohort of Weston Breakthrough Fellows will be accepted from June 16 to July 12, 2026. Wittington Ventures operates as a multistage investment platform that supports ventures across various sectors, including consumer goods, health care, and climate innovation, all backed by Wittington Investments Ltd, which holds a portfolio encompassing major brands like Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Why it Matters

This funding initiative represents a pivotal moment for Canada’s agri-tech sector, which has faced declining investment levels and a challenging landscape for startups. By providing targeted support and resources, the Weston Breakthrough Fellows programme not only aims to foster innovation but also seeks to ensure that Canadian talent remains anchored within the country. As the world increasingly turns its focus to sustainable practices and climate resilience, this initiative could prove crucial in positioning Canada as a leader in agri-tech and climate solutions, ultimately benefiting the economy and the environment alike.
