Via Rail has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity for long-distance train passengers at one of Canada’s busiest airports. On Wednesday, the Crown corporation revealed its plans to establish a new integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec. This hub will link Via Rail services, exo trains, and shuttle services to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport, creating a comprehensive transport solution.

A One-Stop Transit Solution

According to Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail, the central objective is to consolidate various transportation options under one roof. “The goal really is to group all of the transportation options together to provide a one-stop shop for transit for people in Dorval and those arriving from outside the city,” he stated. The proposed hub aims to simplify travel for both local commuters and visitors, addressing the current fragmented transit system in the area.

At present, passengers transferring from Via Rail to exo trains face a cumbersome journey that requires navigating an underpass and crossing several roads to reach the transfer stations. Local commuters have expressed optimism about the new hub’s potential to facilitate easier travel. “That would be fantastic. If we could connect it with the REM [light rail] somehow, then we would have a totally integrated public transportation system,” remarked Paul Parisien, a resident of the West Island.

Local Support and Anticipated Benefits

Dorval Mayor Marc Doret has shown strong support for the project, acknowledging the current challenges faced by commuters. “It’s very difficult to get around the area right now,” he noted. “We’re going to have everything together in one central area, and that’s what’s going to make it easier and user-friendly for the public.”

The integration of transport services is expected to encourage a shift from car dependency to public transit usage. Helou emphasized that “integrated mobility is a proven concept,” suggesting that providing accessible and straightforward transportation options will motivate people to utilise public transport more frequently. “For every transportation need, there is a transportation option,” he added.

Project Details and Timeline

The current plan involves closing the existing Via Rail station located south of the CN tracks and constructing a new bimodal station to the north, adjacent to the existing exo stop. To ensure continuous service, an overpass will be built over the tracks, allowing both Via Rail and exo trains to operate without interruption. Helou assured that this development will lead to a significantly improved experience for passengers, making the transit system more accessible.

While Via Rail has secured funding from the Government of Canada, a precise budget for the project remains undetermined. As for the timeline, Helou indicated that full construction could take between two to five years, although specific dates have yet to be confirmed.

Why it Matters

The proposed transit hub in Dorval represents a significant step towards modernising and streamlining public transport in Quebec. By integrating various modes of transport, the initiative not only promises to enhance the commuter experience but also aims to reduce reliance on personal vehicles, thus contributing to a greener environment. As urban centres continue to grow, such developments are crucial in ensuring that transit systems can efficiently accommodate increasing passenger demand while promoting sustainable travel options. This project has the potential to serve as a model for future transit initiatives across Canada, demonstrating the benefits of cohesive urban planning and integrated mobility solutions.
