A new study has delivered a sobering warning about the future of New Orleans, suggesting that the city could be engulfed by the Gulf of Mexico within decades due to climate change. Researchers assert that ongoing sea level rise and severe wetland erosion in southern Louisiana have reached a critical threshold, demanding immediate action to facilitate the relocation of residents.
The Impending Crisis
The study, which appears in the journal *Nature Sustainability*, outlines a grim scenario for New Orleans, predicting that the low-lying city may become completely surrounded by water by the end of this century. The combination of rising sea levels, exacerbated by climate change, and extensive coastal erosion—driven in part by industrial activities—paints a picture of a region in peril.
The researchers estimate that southern Louisiana could experience between three to seven metres of sea-level rise, while losing around 75% of its coastal wetlands. This catastrophic loss of land would cause the shoreline to move as much as 100 kilometres inland, effectively isolating New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
A Call for Urgent Action
Jesse Keenan, a climate adaptation expert from Tulane University and a co-author of the study, emphasised that the time for action is now. He stated, “New Orleans is in a terminal condition,” urging city, state, and federal leaders to initiate a coordinated effort to assist vulnerable communities in relocating. He underscored the need for honesty in discussing the city’s fate, saying, “There is an opportunity for palliative care; we can transition people and the economy.”
The report highlights that while climate mitigation remains crucial, New Orleans has already crossed the “point of no return.” Keenan warns that even halting climate change today would not save the city, as it faces inevitable inundation.
The Historical Context of Erosion
Louisiana has already lost approximately 2,000 square miles of land to coastal erosion since the 1930s, an area roughly the size of Delaware. Alarmingly, an additional 3,000 square miles are projected to vanish in the next 50 years. The pace of land loss is staggering—an area the size of a football pitch disappears every 100 minutes.
Despite the financial investment of billions into flood protection infrastructure post-Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the study expresses concern that even these levees, which require significant upgrades, will ultimately prove insufficient against the escalating threats posed by climate change.
The Political Impasse
Efforts to address these challenges have faced significant political hurdles. Last year, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry halted the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project, which aimed to restore the natural flow of the Mississippi River to rebuild coastal wetlands. This decision, framed as financially unsustainable, has drawn criticism from environmental advocates. Former congressman Garret Graves condemned the move as a “boneheaded decision” that would severely undermine the state’s coastal protection efforts.
Moreover, legal battles over accountability for environmental damage caused by the fossil fuel industry have also stalled progress. Recently, the US Supreme Court allowed oil and gas companies to contest state jury decisions regarding their responsibility for coastal degradation, further complicating the state’s efforts to reclaim lost land.
Preparing for Relocation
With no comprehensive plan in place to facilitate the migration of residents from New Orleans, the situation remains precarious. Experts agree that the government must begin to create infrastructure in safer areas, particularly across Lake Pontchartrain to the north of the city. “This could be an opportunity for New Orleans to help migrate people further north, but it requires foresight and leadership,” Keenan noted.
Timothy Dixon, a coastal environment expert, echoed the urgency of the situation, stating, “New Orleans is not going to disappear in 10 years, but the time for a relocation plan should have been established decades ago.”
