What Is the Ingredient in Question?

According to Caroline Rainsford, Director of Science at The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), the decision to prohibit TPO in cosmetic products within the UK is based on its hazardous properties, particularly concerning potential exposure in extreme situations.
Timeline for the Ban
The ban on TPO, which took effect on 1st September 2025 within the European Union, has now been adopted in the UK. While manufacturers are prohibited from producing new products containing TPO, salons can continue to offer existing stock until Valentine’s Day 2027. This gives salons a transitional period during which they can still provide gel manicures using TPO, albeit until their supplies are exhausted. Post-February 2027, salons will need to adapt to TPO-free alternatives.
Alternatives for Salons
It is important to note that TPO is not a component of all gel polishes. Traditional air-dried polishes remain unaffected by this ban.
