As the anticipation builds, the West Island is poised for a significant shift in its public transport framework with the upcoming launch of four new stations for the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) on May 18. The Des Sources, Fairview-Pointe-Claire, Kirkland, and l’Anse à l’Orme stations promise to enhance connectivity but bring with them a host of logistical challenges and community concerns.

Parking Challenges Ahead

While the new stations herald a new era of travel for residents, parking remains a contentious issue. Fairview station currently offers no parking facilities for REM users, posing significant accessibility concerns. In Kirkland, 200 parking spots have been allocated, but these are exclusively reserved for local residents, further complicating access for those from outside the area. In contrast, Des Sources will feature 484 parking spaces, while l’Anse à l’Orme will provide 216 spots.

Pointe-Claire’s Mayor, John Belvedere, expressed concern over the accessibility issues, stating, “Right now, it’s hard to get there by car; [there’s] no parking. We can’t cross the Trans-Canada highway safely – there’s no overpass, there’s no bike path.” He emphasised the necessity for collaborative efforts within the community to address these challenges effectively.

Ongoing Negotiations for Fairview Parking

In response to the parking dilemma at Fairview station, discussions are underway between REM officials and Cadillac Fairview regarding the establishment of parking spots. However, as of now, no formal agreement has been reached. Mayor Belvedere noted, “They’re looking at X number of hundreds of spots. I believe it is only temporary until things settle down. Obviously, Cadillac Fairview has a commitment to their tenants, too.”

This negotiation highlights the complex interplay between public transport initiatives and the interests of local businesses, as they seek to balance the needs of commuters with their commitments to existing clientele.

STM’s Ambitious Bus Network Overhaul

In tandem with the REM developments, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its bus network, touted as the most extensive to date. This initiative aims to facilitate easier access to the REM for West Island residents and to encourage them to reduce car usage.

Kirkland’s Mayor, Michel Gibson, expressed optimism about the new system, stating, “It’s a welcome addition for our commercial, our industrial base and for our residents. They say it’ll be a great way to go downtown – but it’ll be a great way to come from downtown also.” This sentiment reflects a hope that the REM will not only serve local commuters but also attract visitors, boosting the local economy.

Traffic Concerns in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue

As the new transport system takes shape, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue is preparing for potential traffic increases. Mayor Michel Boudreault acknowledged the likelihood of congestion, particularly on the Morgan exit and Chemin Sainte-Marie, which are not designed to handle heavy traffic. “But the administration and council are watching that closely in the next couple of months. And we’re already working on possible solutions in case it becomes an issue,” he assured.

The proactive approach of local officials underscores the importance of anticipating the impacts of new infrastructure projects on existing roadways.

Why it Matters

The introduction of the new REM stations is a pivotal moment for the West Island, promising to reshape commuting patterns and enhance accessibility. However, the associated challenges—particularly in terms of parking and traffic management—highlight the need for a coordinated response from local authorities, businesses, and residents. As these developments unfold, the success of the REM will depend not only on its operational efficiency but also on the community’s ability to adapt and collaborate towards a more connected and sustainable future.
