A groundbreaking study from a Saskatoon infectious disease laboratory is delving into the immune responses of humans and rodents to better understand hantavirus and develop potential treatments. This research comes in the wake of a confirmed outbreak on a cruise ship that has raised alarm across health sectors, particularly following the tragic deaths of three passengers. The World Health Organization is currently monitoring the situation, focusing on passengers who boarded the vessel on April 11 in Argentina.

Understanding Hantavirus and Its Carriers

Dr. Bryce Warner, a scientist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan, emphasises that deer mice are the primary vectors for hantavirus. Interestingly, these rodents exhibit a unique resilience to the virus.

“When deer mice are infected with the virus, they don’t suffer from any symptoms,” Dr. Warner explained. “They carry it for life without showing any signs of illness, which starkly contrasts with the human experience.”

For humans, hantavirus can lead to a range of severe health complications. According to Health Canada, symptoms may include fatigue, dizziness, fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and coughing. As the condition progresses, it can result in respiratory distress, making early identification and treatment crucial.

The Current Landscape of Hantavirus Cases in Canada

In Canada, the incidence of hantavirus is relatively low, with approximately five to ten cases reported annually, predominantly in Saskatchewan and Alberta. However, the fatality rate is concerning, as Health Canada indicates that roughly 40 per cent of these cases result in death. Dr. Warner stresses that while the likelihood of contracting the virus remains low, the absence of effective treatment options renders hantavirus particularly dangerous.

Research Initiatives at VIDO

The ongoing research at VIDO is focused on the contrasting immune responses between deer mice and humans, with the aim of identifying specific biomarkers that could be targeted for therapeutic interventions. “We’re still in the very early stages of this project,” Dr. Warner noted, highlighting the need for further research before any definitive treatment can be established.

Currently, there are no approved vaccines for hantavirus in Canada or anywhere in the Americas. Although a few vaccines have undergone initial clinical trials, progress has been limited. Dr. Warner’s lab is actively involved in developing one or two vaccine candidates, which are now in pre-clinical studies. The ultimate goal is to create a viable vaccine that can provide protection against this virus.

It is worth mentioning that while vaccines have been developed in China and South Korea, they target strains of the virus that are not present in the Americas, underscoring the urgency of finding a tailored solution.

Preventative Measures for the Public

As researchers work diligently on potential treatments, Dr. Warner advises the public on effective strategies to mitigate the risk of hantavirus infection. The virus can be shed intermittently in rodent excretions, including urine, faeces, and saliva. When cleaning areas where rodents have been present, there is a risk of the virus becoming airborne.

“Awareness is key,” he cautioned. “It’s important to ventilate spaces and use appropriate disinfectants. Wearing masks and gloves while cleaning affected areas can significantly reduce the risk of exposure, especially if there is known rodent activity.”
