A recent study has revealed that making healthier lifestyle choices—specifically avoiding smoking, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes—can significantly extend the period free from dementia by approximately 13 years. This extensive research monitored over 12,400 individuals, all free from dementia at the age of 55, for an average span of 26 years. The findings underscore the critical importance of addressing cardiovascular health for dementia prevention.
Key Findings from the Study
Conducted for the journal Neurology Open Access, the study tracked participants who were assessed for their cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, and smoking habits. Over the course of the study, 3,008 individuals developed dementia, while 5,238 passed away without a diagnosis of the condition. Those who maintained none of the three risk factors enjoyed an extra 13 years without dementia compared to those who possessed all three.
For individuals with one risk factor, the average dementia-free period extended by 26.3 years; for those with two risk factors, it was 21 years, and those burdened with all three faced slightly over 17 years. Remarkably, participants who had these health risks around the age of 56 were found to be more than twice as likely to develop dementia and five times as likely to die from other causes prematurely.
The Role of Cardiovascular Health
The study highlights that the overall burden of cardiovascular risk factors plays a crucial role in determining dementia-free longevity. “These findings indicate that total cardiovascular burden, rather than isolated risk factors, is a key determinant of dementia-free survival,” the authors stated. They emphasised that these health challenges often arise during midlife and can have persistent effects on neurodegenerative conditions, making early detection and management essential.
Additionally, demographic trends were observed, with women typically living 1.5 years longer without dementia than men. Similarly, white participants enjoyed a greater number of dementia-free years—over three and a half years more than their Black counterparts.
Implications for Future Research
The findings add weight to the growing body of evidence linking lifestyle factors to cognitive health. Previous studies have identified vascular risk factors as significant contributors to dementia risk. This latest research reinforces the need for proactive health management to lower the risk of cognitive decline.
Further studies have also emerged recently, exploring the potential of specific medications to mitigate dementia risks. Notably, GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, which are primarily used in treating Type 2 diabetes and aiding weight loss, have been associated with a 33% reduction in dementia risk. SGLT2 inhibitors, another class of diabetes drugs, showed an even more substantial benefit, reducing the risk by 43%.
Moreover, recent findings from BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine indicate that even low levels of alcohol consumption could elevate the risk of dementia, reinforcing the necessity of comprehensive lifestyle evaluations in preventing neurodegenerative diseases.
