A remarkable tribute to marine conservation has emerged with the naming of a new seahorse species, Hippocampus amandavincentae, after renowned University of British Columbia professor Amanda Vincent. Celebrated for her groundbreaking work in seahorse science and conservation, Vincent has long been a champion for these unique creatures and their habitats, striving to ensure their survival amidst numerous environmental challenges.
Celebrating a Passionate Advocate for Seahorses
Vincent, who co-founded UBC’s Project Seahorse, has dedicated decades to safeguarding seahorses from the threats of overfishing, habitat destruction, and illegal trade. “I really wanted to get involved in helping to save the world… We’re involved in pioneering a lot of breakthroughs, because who doesn’t love a seahorse?” she expressed in a recent interview. Through her leadership, Project Seahorse has become a leader in global seahorse research, conservation efforts, and policy advocacy.
Her work spans various levels of engagement, from grassroots initiatives within local communities to high-profile discussions at United Nations Conventions. Vincent emphasises the importance of sustainable fishing practices, stating, “Fishing is necessary, fishing is vital, but it has got to be done in sustainable and sensible ways.”
The Discovery of Hippocampus amandavincentae
The newly identified seahorse species was discovered by researchers examining specimens from the Indian Ocean. Measuring approximately 16 cm in length, Hippocampus amandavincentae features a distinctive short snout, a small crown atop its head, and spines along its body. While its habitat has been identified, much remains unknown about its behaviour and ecology, as the species has yet to be studied in its natural environment.
Vincent expressed her excitement over the discovery, saying, “I’m thrilled. It’s pretty wonderful to wake up and open your email and discover just two days ago that there’s a creature on the other side of the world that is beautiful and wonderful and special and has your name on it.”
Planning for Future Research
Looking ahead, Vincent is eager to embark on field studies to better understand this new seahorse’s ecology, vulnerabilities, and conservation needs. “Which is to get in the field, with my glorious seahorse and actually learn about its ecology and its vulnerabilities, and its conservation possibilities and try to make sure that all is well,” she remarked.
Currently, approximately one-third of seahorse species face threats to their existence. Nevertheless, each new discovery contributes to a growing body of knowledge that can inform conservation strategies. “We’ve got new approaches, new tools, new colleagues involved,” Vincent noted. “So, it’s very exciting to see that we are changing the trajectory by the passion and hard work of a lot of people.”
