Conducted in Atlanta, the research identified approximately 450 cases over a five-year period, with around one-third of those patients succumbing to their infections. These findings, released this week by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), emphasise the urgent need for greater awareness and reporting of such diseases, particularly in light of changing environmental conditions.

This pioneering investigation represents a significant step in understanding the impact of invasive mold infections, which have often gone unreported due to the lack of mandatory disclosure requirements for healthcare professionals. Dr. Jeremy Gold, the senior author of the study and a prominent figure at the CDC, remarked, “It’s kind of the first time we’ve had an estimate like this.” He underscored the importance of these findings, especially as climate change continues to exacerbate conditions that promote mold growth following natural disasters like hurricanes and floods.
Dr. Jeffrey Jenks, an infectious disease expert from Duke University, concurred with Gold’s assessment, stating, “I agree that the frequency of fungal infections will likely increase with climate change.” The dual threats of environmental change and an ageing population present a worrying combination for public health.
Understanding the Risks of Mold Exposure
Invasive mold diseases, which are rare but severe infections caused by specific species of mold, typically affect individuals with compromised immune systems. Most healthy individuals are unlikely to experience adverse effects from mold exposure; however, vulnerable groups—including the elderly, cancer patients, and those with weakened immune systems—face life-threatening consequences. Previous CDC estimates suggested that over 15,000 hospitalisations annually might be linked to invasive mold diseases.
The recent study sought to paint a clearer picture of the prevalence of these diseases at a local level. Collaborating with four hospitals and their outpatient clinics in the Atlanta region, the research team examined potential cases from 2020 to 2024. Initially identifying nearly 1,000 potential cases, they ultimately narrowed this down to around 450 confirmed instances of invasive mold disease, after excluding individuals who did not meet the criteria.
Hospital Admissions and Case Distribution
The research revealed that hospitals can expect to encounter three to five cases of invasive mold infections for every 100 inpatient beds, with rates increasing in larger academic facilities that typically manage more complicated cases. Notably, many infected patients had already experienced health complications, particularly following COVID-19, which rendered them more susceptible to such infections.
While the study successfully highlighted the incidence of these infections in the Atlanta area, Dr. Gold cautioned against drawing broad conclusions for other regions, as the prevalence of mold-related issues can vary significantly across the country. Nonetheless, he indicated that the findings may help hospital administrators gauge whether the cases they observe align with expected levels or signify a potential outbreak.

Dr. Jenks lauded the study as a “valuable” contribution to the understanding of invasive mold infections, advocating for similar research in other parts of the United States.
