Jonathan Blades, head of policy at Asthma + Lung UK, echoed these sentiments, emphasising that lung transplant rates in the UK lag behind those in other developed nations, leading to poor respiratory health outcomes.

“There is an urgent need for renewed political and research focus to transform lung health in the UK,” Blades remarked. “This new technology marks an important step towards that ambition, potentially giving more people with serious lung conditions valuable time with their loved ones.”

Prof. Andrew Fisher, a consultant transplant physician at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a member of the British Transplantation Society, stressed the necessity for comprehensive evidence to demonstrate the system’s impact on lung transplantation rates. “It’s vital that we generate robust data that show how this device influences transplant activity and supports timely access for patients yearning for a suitable organ,” he asserted.
