Via Rail has unveiled an ambitious plan aimed at streamlining long-distance train travel for passengers arriving at one of Canada’s busiest airports. Announced on Wednesday, the proposal will see the creation of a comprehensive transit hub in Dorval, Quebec, which will integrate services from Via Rail, exo trains, and shuttle services to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport.
A Centralised Solution for Commuters
Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail, highlighted the primary objective behind this initiative: to consolidate various modes of transportation under one roof. “The goal really is to group all of the transportation options under the same roof to provide a one-stop shop for transit for people in Dorval, for people coming in from outside, inside the city. And really the goal is to make the whole experience better for everyone,” he explained.
Currently, the transit experience in Dorval is seen as “fragmented,” with commuters needing to navigate an underpass and cross multiple roads to switch between services. Many regular users have expressed enthusiasm for the proposed hub, believing it could significantly simplify the transfer process. Paul Parisien, a West Island resident, remarked, “That would be fantastic. And if we could connect it with the REM [light rail] somehow, then we would have a totally integrated public transportation system.”
Endorsement from Local Officials
Dorval Mayor Marc Doret has publicly endorsed the project, emphasising the challenges currently faced by commuters in the area. “It’s very difficult to get around the area right now. We’re going to have everything together in one central area, and that’s what’s going to make it easier and user-friendly for the public,” he stated.
The planned hub aims to foster a shift from personal vehicles to public transit, aligning with broader efforts to promote sustainable transport methods. Helou noted, “Integrated mobility is a proven concept. Offer transportation options that are easy to use, simple to use and people will use it.”
Construction Timeline and Funding
The project will involve closing the existing Via Rail station located on the south side of the CN tracks and constructing a new bimodal station on the north end, adjacent to the current exo stop. This design includes an overpass to ensure uninterrupted service for both Via Rail and exo trains. “So no disruptions of service and a much better experience, an accessible experience for passengers,” Helou assured.
While Via Rail has secured funding from the Canadian government, a final budget for the project has not yet been determined. Additionally, while specific timelines remain unclear, Helou indicated that the construction process could span between two to five years.
