In a bold departure from traditional gaming consoles, Nex Playground, the latest innovation from the American tech firm Nex, is set to launch in the UK and Ireland on 22 June. This unique cube-shaped device prioritises physical activity over high-end graphics, aiming to encourage children to engage in movement while enjoying video games. With its impressive debut in the US market, where it became the third best-selling console during Black Friday 2025, Nex Playground is poised to make waves in the gaming landscape.

A New Approach to Gaming

David Lee, chief executive of Nex, has crafted the Playground with the intention of combatting the growing concerns surrounding sedentary lifestyles among children. By utilising AI and a built-in camera, the console eliminates traditional controllers, relying instead on body movements to interact with its library of over 60 games, including popular titles like Peppa Pig.

The device’s innovative design has garnered attention and curiosity, especially given its unexpected commercial success. As motion-controlled gaming has existed since the Nintendo Wii’s launch in 2006, Nex Playground’s focus on physical engagement rather than mere entertainment marks a significant shift in the industry.

Pricing and Subscription Model

Upon its UK launch, the Nex Playground will be priced at £269 (€319). While users will receive five introductory games for free, access to the full range of over 60 titles will require a subscription. A yearly subscription is set at £90, with a quarterly option available for £45.

Parents who have invested in the Playground have expressed mixed feelings regarding the subscription model. Nick from Louisiana, who purchased the console for his children aged three and five, initially viewed the subscription as a potential drawback. However, he reconsidered after comparing it to the cost of individual games for other consoles, stating, “When you consider the fact that a single Switch game costs about $70 or $80, it’s really not too egregious.” Similarly, Brian from Philadelphia, who bought the device for his six-year-old son, noted the value in terms of engagement and active play.

User Experience and Technology

Setting up the Nex Playground is reportedly a straightforward process, with an interface designed for ease of use. The console employs AI and a wide-angle camera to track 18 points on the player’s body, creating a real-time avatar on-screen. However, some users have noted that the camera’s tracking capabilities may not be as precise as those of older systems, such as the Nintendo Wii or Xbox Kinect.

During my personal experience with the device, I found that while some games required minimal movement, others, particularly rhythm and fitness games, demanded a more comprehensive physical engagement. The “Health & Fitness” category includes sessions like daily Zumba workouts, which, despite a lack of clarity regarding my execution of movements, did effectively promote activity in a more convenient setting than a gym class.

Privacy concerns associated with the device have been addressed by Nex, which emphasises that the camera only tracks motion and does not store video footage. The Playground carries a kidSAFE+ COPPA certification, ensuring compliance with regulations governing children’s online privacy. Additionally, parental controls allow for the restriction of certain games or content.

Addressing Screen Time Concerns

As discussions surrounding children’s screen time intensify, the Playground positions itself as a viable alternative to passive digital entertainment. Although users will still be looking at a screen, the console offers a compromise by encouraging active movement during gameplay.

Parents I spoke with indicated that their children typically engaged with the Playground for sessions lasting between half an hour to an hour. The games often served as a transitional activity, helping to facilitate a shift into more diverse forms of play. While some parents acknowledged that the device might contribute to increased screen time, they also appreciated its potential to foster active engagement in a way that traditional media, such as cartoons, could not.

Market Position and Future Potential

Despite its unconventional approach, the Nex Playground has proven its market viability, having surpassed one million units sold since its launch in December 2023 in the US and Canada. Nevertheless, industry experts suggest that it may not directly compete with established consoles like the Nintendo Switch, which reported sales of over 17 million units by the end of 2025. Chris Scullion, deputy editor of Video Games Chronicle, commented that while the Playground may not challenge larger systems, its “clear family focus” could appeal to parents seeking a modern alternative to the Wii Sports or Wii Fit experiences.

In conjunction with its UK and Ireland launch, Nex has announced a partnership with Wrexham AFC, which will see its branding featured on the club’s kit sleeves and engage in community programming. This strategic move could further embed the Nex Playground within family-oriented entertainment, positioning it as a tool for promoting active family engagement.

Why it Matters

The Nex Playground represents a significant evolution in the gaming industry, aligning with rising health concerns and the demand for interactive, family-friendly entertainment. By prioritising movement and active play, it not only addresses the issue of children’s sedentary lifestyles but also encourages families to engage in shared experiences. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the Playground could redefine how families connect and play together, paving the way for a more active future in gaming.
