Naiha Shafiq, a 27-year-old from London, shared her experiences with the device, describing it as transformative. “Before getting the artificial pancreas, I was frequently hospitalised due to diabetic ketoacidosis,” she recounted, emphasising the device’s life-changing impact on her health and well-being. Shafiq also highlighted the challenges she faced with insulin injections due to her religious beliefs, making the pump’s convenience particularly beneficial.
The NHS Commitment and Future Plans
In 2023, the NHS announced that over 150,000 adults and children with type 1 diabetes would be eligible for this advanced treatment option. The initial focus has been on children, with approximately 32,000 young patients already fitted with the device—representing 72.3% of those eligible. The programme will continue expanding over the coming years, aiming to ensure that every eligible individual receives the support they need.
Helen Kirrane, head of policy and campaigns at Diabetes UK, applauded the rollout, stating that it has made a “significant, life-changing difference for many thousands of people living with type 1 diabetes.” She acknowledged the ongoing challenges in reaching all eligible patients and stressed the need for continued advocacy to ensure equitable access across the UK.
