In a stunning revelation, Nigel Farage has come under fire for accepting a £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne, a prominent donor associated with Reform UK, prior to his election as an MP. This financial backing, intended for Farage’s personal protection, has ignited accusations from both the Labour and Conservative parties, who claim he failed to declare the sizeable donation as required by parliamentary regulations.

The Controversial Donation

Farage disclosed the £5 million gift during an interview with The Telegraph, stating it was given to ensure his safety in the wake of increasing threats. The former Brexit Party leader noted that his home was targeted in a firebomb attack last year, heightening concerns for his security.

Harborne, a British cryptocurrency investor residing in Thailand, has made headlines for his substantial contributions to political parties, including a staggering £9 million donation to Reform UK last year—recorded as the largest single donation by a living individual to a UK political party. In total, his financial support to Reform reached £12 million in 2025. Despite this, the £5 million gift to Farage, which reportedly occurred in early 2024, has not appeared in his register of interests as an MP, raising eyebrows across the political spectrum.

Accusations of Rule-Breaking

Both Labour and Conservative leaders have expressed outrage over Farage’s failure to declare the donation. Labour Party chair Anna Turley emphatically stated that Farage seems to have breached Commons rules by neglecting to reveal this significant financial support from his billionaire backer. Conservative chair Kevin Hollinrake added, “As a new MP, he should have declared the gift. This stinks, and Reform should come clean now.”

In response, Farage’s team maintains that there was no obligation to disclose the funds as they were a personal gift. A spokesperson for Reform UK stated, “This was a personal unconditional gift that was given before he was elected. We are confident everything has been declared in accordance with the rules.” They also accused the Conservatives of jeopardising Farage’s safety by denying him state-funded protection during their time in government.

Security Concerns and Previous Attacks

In his interview, Farage recounted a troubling incident from 2019 when a milkshake was thrown at him while campaigning in Newcastle for the Brexit Party, an event that heightened Harborne’s concerns for his safety. Farage lamented, “I have tried and failed in the past to get security funded by the Home Office, and I don’t think the state will ever help me. I’m very much on my own and will be for the rest of my life.”

He also revealed that in early 2025, a lit device was pushed through his letterbox during an apparent arson attempt. Thankfully, the fire extinguished itself, but the attack remains under investigation, with no suspects identified.

Discussing the threats he faces, Farage voiced apprehension that if such violence continues, capable individuals may shy away from public service altogether. “My worry about it is if that continues down this path, you’ll finish up with good people who should go into public life just not doing it, and that’s a real concern,” he stated.

Why it Matters

The implications of this controversy extend far beyond Farage himself, touching on the integrity of parliamentary regulations and the nature of political financing in the UK. As scrutiny intensifies over transparency in political donations, this incident raises significant questions about accountability and the potential influence of wealthy donors on elected officials. With public trust in political institutions already fragile, incidents like these could further erode confidence in the system, prompting calls for stricter regulations and oversight in the realm of political funding.
