A recent analysis has unveiled a startling impact of climate change: rising nighttime temperatures are robbing individuals of nearly a week’s worth of sleep each year. This alarming trend, documented by the US-based climate science organisation Climate Central, reveals that from 2020 to 2025, the average person lost approximately 56 hours of sleep annually due to elevated nighttime warmth, with over six hours directly attributable to climate change. This research serves as a wake-up call regarding the profound effects of a warming planet on human health.
The Magnitude of Sleep Loss
The study, which examined 1,338 cities worldwide, highlights an unsettling reality: sleep deprivation linked to climate change has doubled since the early 1970s in almost all the cities surveyed, with an even steeper increase in many locations. Alarmingly, in 840 of these cities, the climate-related loss of sleep has tripled.
Cities in the Middle East are bearing the brunt of these changes. Residents of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates are losing between 55 and 87 hours of sleep each year, with 12 to 16 of those hours directly caused by climate change—an equivalent of nearly two full nights. In southern India and various Southeast Asian countries, sleep loss ranges from 78 to 91 hours annually, with eight to nine hours linked to climate warming.
Regional Disparities in Sleep Deprivation
The effects of climate change are not uniformly felt across the globe. In West Africa, nations such as Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso report annual sleep losses of 65 hours or more, with 10 to 11 hours linked to climate change. Meanwhile, in the United States, the average loss in 253 cities stands at 36 hours per year, with about four hours due to global warming. Cities in Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada are among the hardest hit.
In the early 1970s, sleep loss attributed to climate change in the US was just over one hour; by the 2020s, this figure had surged to roughly four hours. This trend underscores a growing public health concern.
Consequences for Health and Wellbeing
The ramifications of sleep deprivation are significant. Poor sleep quality is associated with negative impacts on mental health, cognitive function, productivity, and overall physical health, including cardiovascular and immune system issues. “For individuals already struggling with inadequate sleep, even minor reductions can accumulate and lead to serious health consequences,” the report warns.
Certain demographics are particularly vulnerable. Older adults, especially those over 65, are experiencing more than double the sleep loss compared to middle-aged individuals. Additionally, people residing in lower-middle-income countries face nearly three times the risk of sleep deprivation related to nighttime warming when compared to their counterparts in wealthier nations. Women and those already living in hotter climates are also at heightened risk as temperatures continue to escalate.
The Inequality of Access to Cooling Solutions
While air conditioning can mitigate some of the adverse effects of rising temperatures, it is not a universal solution. As of 2021, only 35 per cent of households globally had access to air conditioning, and this access is often tied to income levels, leaving many in hot regions—particularly in South Asia and Africa—vulnerable to the impacts of warmer nights. Even in wealthier nations, where cooling systems are more common, the heat still disrupts sleep patterns.
The analysis utilised observed daily minimum temperatures alongside estimates of what those temperatures would have been without anthropogenic climate change. This approach spanned a six-year period from 2020 to 2025 and compared historical data from the early 1970s, providing a comprehensive view of the long-term trends.
