Kincardine, Ontario — When Nuclear Promise X launched in 2018 from a small office in Kincardine, Ontario, the nuclear industry was wrestling with cost overruns and project delays. From Refurbishment to Digital Innovation
The company’s journey mirrors the broader shift in Canada’s nuclear landscape. Initially approached by Bruce Power to streamline its second reactor refurbishment, NPX discovered that each solved challenge spawned new ones. This revelation catalysed the formation of specialised teams in machine learning, software engineering, and project management.
“The problem statements started to grow,” explains Bharath Nangia, NPX’s chief executive officer and co-founder. “That gave birth to our machine learning team, software engineering team, design engineering team and project management team.”
This organic growth trajectory positioned NPX perfectly for the industry’s digital transformation. The company now supports digital-first planning for new builds, develops custom digital tools, and implements automation solutions to modernise operations. Their portfolio includes deploying advanced robotics like Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot for remote inspections in both nuclear facilities and uranium mines.
Scaling for a New Nuclear Era
The expansion into new nuclear projects became evident when Bruce Power once again partnered with NPX in March to manage early planning stages of Bruce C — a proposed 4,800-megawatt expansion that could significantly boost Ontario’s clean energy capacity.

This work encompasses feasibility studies, planning, and community engagement as Bruce Power evaluates whether to proceed with the project. The collaboration reflects how nuclear discussions have evolved from simple refurbishment conversations to comprehensive energy strategy debates.
“Canada’s nuclear sector is no longer simply about electricity,” observes George Christidis, director of government relations and communications at the Canadian Nuclear Association. “Electricity is now being recognised as a foundational economic innovation, job-creating, climate-achieving and national security asset.”
The urgency behind this evolution cannot be overstated. Early 2025 estimates from MIT suggest global data centre energy consumption could reach 1,050 TWh by the end of 2026, potentially making these facilities the world’s fifth-largest energy consumers — surpassing entire nations like Japan and Russia.
Building Tomorrow’s Nuclear Workforce
Perhaps most critically, NPX has recognised that technological advancement must be matched by human capital development. The company invests heavily in students and recent graduates while fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration through quarterly “hackathons.”
These intensive sessions see teams tackle real customer challenges over several days, experimenting with emerging technologies and developing proof-of-concept solutions. Innovations emerging from these events span artificial intelligence applications to advanced robotics integration.
“We’ve kept some of that flexibility, that agility, that entrepreneurial mindset from the early days,” notes Margaret McBeath, NPX’s chief people and experience officer and co-founder. “The conversation at every nuclear conference right now is scaling the workforce to meet the demand.”
This focus on workforce development addresses what industry experts consider the sector’s biggest bottleneck. While technological capabilities advance rapidly, translating those innovations into practical applications requires skilled professionals who can bridge traditional engineering with modern digital tools.
Debate Over Nuclear’s Future Role
Despite industry optimism, not all voices support aggressive nuclear expansion. Allison Macfarlane, professor and director at the University of British Columbia’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, acknowledges that refurbishing existing reactors makes economic sense but expresses skepticism about large-scale new projects.

As renewable energy costs decline and battery storage technology improves, new nuclear projects face increasing economic headwinds, according to Macfarlane, who previously chaired the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Nevertheless, NPX continues positioning itself to support projects that gain regulatory approval and financial backing. The company’s adaptive business model reflects an industry in transition — balancing traditional nuclear engineering with digital innovation while preparing for whatever energy future emerges.
“We’re just getting started,” says Nangia, reflecting the sentiment shared across Canada’s evolving nuclear sector.
