The Hollywood actor Cheyenne Jackson has turned his own brush with the insurance gap into a viral mission, launching the “One Job Away” Instagram series to help fellow Screen Actors Guild members who are struggling to secure health cover.
On Monday 26 October 2026, the 51-year-old actor, best known for roles in 30 Rock, Glee and American Horror Story, revealed that he had arrived about $6,000 short of the $28,000 annual threshold required by SAG to qualify for health insurance.
His response was not a quiet plea but a public campaign. Through Instagram, Jackson began spotlighting actors who were reportedly close to qualifying, asking casting directors, producers and friends to help them book the work that could keep their benefits intact.
From Five Lines to a Lifeline
Last year, Jackson said, he was $6,000 away from meeting the SAG-AFTRA health-insurance requirement. The problem, he explained, was not fame but the precise economics of a performer’s working life: one delayed job, one quiet episode, one small role can mean the difference between coverage and a gap.
That gap was narrowed, Jackson said, when actor Kathy Bates helped him get five lines on an episode of her series Matlock. In an Instagram post, he wrote: “Last year, Kathy Bates helped me qualify for my SAG-AFTRA health insurance by helping me get 5 lines on an episode of Matlock,” adding: “I know what it feels like to be one job away… and what it means when someone actually comes through.”
Jackson continued: “So I’m starting a little series called ONE JOB AWAY, spotlighting fellow actors who are close to qualifying for their SAG health insurance and could use a little help with that next booking.” He said: “I’ll share their faces, their work, and how to reach them.
