The blazes, consuming vast swathes of lowland tropical rainforest, have already burned within 200 metres of the Rangkong research station. Meteorologists warn the intense fire season will persist through October, driven by an exceptionally strong El Niño phenomenon that has created months of extreme dryness across the region.

While land-clearing fires are common in Indonesia, this year’s conditions have allowed them to escape control with devastating speed. “The issue has surpassed any local organisation’s capacity,” acknowledges Caitlin O’Connell, deputy director of the Gunung Palung orangutan conservation programme, who urgently calls for large-scale water bombing and professional firefighting expertise.

The danger is compounded by peat soil, which, once ignited, can smoulder underground for months. These animals require vast territories and exist at low population densities, making relocation impossible. “You can’t just shove them all together in what remains of the forest,” notes Professor Knott. Their survival depends entirely on the preservation of their forest habitat.

The fires have already claimed lives. A mother and baby orangutan were recently rescued from burning areas in East Kotawaringin, central Kalimantan, though rescue operations face their own challenges in reaching affected populations before flames consume their habitats entirely.
