Exploring the enchanting Loire Valley by e-bike offers a unique way to experience France’s stunning landscapes, rich history, and gourmet delights. This picturesque region, known for its majestic châteaux and sprawling vineyards, invites both seasoned cyclists and leisure riders to savour its beauty at a gentle pace. Join us as we delve into a self-guided tour that promises adventure, culinary indulgence, and the serene charm of this French jewel.

A Scenic Start

Our journey begins with a swift Eurostar journey to Paris, followed by a comfortable TGV ride to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps. With the sun casting a warm glow over the vineyards, it feels as if we have stepped right into one of JMW Turner’s evocative landscapes. As a novice cyclist who prefers the flatlands and sunshine, the idea of a cycling holiday had never enticed me. However, my enthusiastic partner, Toby, convinced me to embark on a self-guided e-bike tour with Cycling for Softies—perfectly tailored for those who prefer a more leisurely approach to cycling.

Arriving at our first stop, the magnificent Château du Rivau, we are greeted by its Renaissance charm. This historic site, where Joan of Arc is said to have gathered her horses before the siege of Orléans in 1429, sets the tone for our adventure. After sipping chilled local rosé and exploring the delightful gardens, we meet Quintin from Cycling for Softies. He provides us with our e-bikes and outlines our itinerary: a journey of approximately 100 miles (160 km) over the next three days, weaving through idyllic vineyards and charming towns like Langeais and Azay-le-Rideau.

Rolling Through Vineyards and History

With a gentle start on our first day of cycling, we find ourselves gliding through verdant vineyards and past quaint farmhouses adorned with honeysuckle. Within no time, we connect to La Loire à Vélo, a 560-mile cycling route tracing the river from Nevers to the Atlantic, which first opened its paths in 2005. Our first stop is Candes-Saint-Martin, an ancient river port town where we relish a sunny beer at La P’tite Vienne, soaking in the tranquil riverside atmosphere.

As we wander through Candes-Saint-Martin’s dusty brocantes and charming wine caves, the allure of the region grows ever stronger. We reluctantly remount our bikes, continuing our journey through fields of sunflowers, their heads bowing in the late afternoon sun. Arriving at Fontevraud-l’Abbaye, one of France’s most beautiful villages and a UNESCO World Heritage site, we check into L’Hôtel de Fontevraud L’Ermitage. The hotel, with its contemporary decor and serene ambience, invites us to unwind after a day of exploration.

Culinary Delights and Cultural Riches

After a restful night, day two dawns, and we’re ready to tackle our next cycling challenge of 34 miles. With our luggage whisked away to our next stop, we set off towards the Château d’Ussé, a sprawling castle famously believed to have inspired Charles Perrault’s fairytale, “Sleeping Beauty.” The route is blissfully traffic-free, allowing us to glide past lush poplar trees and willows, with the sweet scent of hay and apples wafting through the air.

Our cycling routine has developed into a delightful rhythm: a leisurely hour of pedalling, followed by a refreshing stop for a drink. After crossing back over the Loire, we find ourselves at Château de Rochecotte, where we’ll spend the next two nights. This elegant château, with its stunning valley views, feels like a luxurious retreat. Dinner is a lavish affair, featuring fresh langoustine, locally sourced pork, and decadent crème brûlée—a true celebration of the region’s culinary prowess.

Concluding the Journey at Villandry

On our final day, we conquer 37 miles with ease, thanks to our trusty e-bikes. The route takes us through medieval towns such as Azay-le-Rideau, past orchards bursting with apples and cherries, until we arrive at the breathtaking Château de Villandry. This 16th-century architectural masterpiece is renowned for its beautifully tiered gardens, meticulously restored in the early 20th century by Joachim Carvallo. As I wander through the ornamental gardens and maze, I can’t help but imagine Delphine, the whimsical persona I adopted, finding joy amidst the vibrant blooms.

This unforgettable trip, organised by Cycling for Softies, is priced from £1,510 per person and includes half-board accommodation, e-bike rentals, luggage transfers, and detailed route information. It’s a perfect blend of culture, nature, and gastronomy, catering to both cycling enthusiasts and those simply seeking to explore at a leisurely pace.

Why it Matters

This e-bike tour of the Loire Valley not only showcases the region’s stunning landscapes and rich history but also promotes sustainable tourism. As more travellers seek eco-friendly options, cycling through this beautiful part of France offers a unique way to connect with the environment while indulging in its culinary and cultural treasures. It’s a journey that leaves a lasting impression, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the natural world and its heritage.
