The couple, both teachers aged 29 and 36 respectively, were informed that this serious defect occurs in approximately one in 3,000 births in the UK.

At 24 weeks, doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London prepared the couple for the challenges they would face following Theo’s birth. They learned that the more severe form of gastroschisis could lead to extended stays in neonatal care and multiple surgeries. For the most complex cases, the prognosis could be dire, with a significant mortality rate.

Groundbreaking Surgical Intervention

Upon receiving the referral to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, the couple faced the daunting prospect of travelling to the US for the surgery. Under the leadership of Dr. Michael Belfort, a pioneer in fetal surgery, the clinical team had been conducting a groundbreaking trial aimed at repairing such complex cases before birth.

Maisie had to first travel to Leuven Hospital in Belgium for an injection of Botox, intended to relax the muscles of Theo’s abdominal wall and facilitate the surgical repair. Following this preparatory step, the family made their way to Texas for the procedure in November.

The surgical operation involved partially exposing Maisie’s womb to reposition the baby safely. Using keyhole surgery, the medical team was able to gently reintegrate Theo’s intestines back into his abdomen. This innovative approach allowed for a minimally invasive procedure while ensuring the safety of both mother and child.

A Successful Outcome

Following the surgery, Maisie experienced a challenging recovery, with the sensation of Theo kicking against her surgical scar. Despite the discomfort, she remained hopeful. The operation was a resounding success, and Theo was born by vaginal delivery in February, a healthy baby boy.

Dr. Belfort expressed his satisfaction with the outcomes, noting the absence of complications both during and after the surgery. He remarked, “The mother, the baby, the surgery, the time of the surgery, the fact that we had zero complications during the fetal surgery and after the fetal surgery, just remarkable.”

With the promising results of this trial, there are plans to expand the programme in the UK, led by Paolo de Coppi, a professor of paediatric surgery at GOSH. He expressed optimism about being able to offer this procedure to more patients in the near future.

Looking to the Future

Both Maisie and Josh have returned to their lives in London, where they are now happily adjusting to parenthood. “Everything they did just completely reversed what could have been a really horrible start to his life,” Maisie shared. “He’s just the best. He’s a completely normal baby essentially.”

Josh added, “We both feel incredibly fortunate. The impact that they’ve had on us as a family is incredible.”

The collaborative efforts between Texas Children’s Hospital and GOSH have opened up new possibilities in fetal surgery, with Dr. Belfort envisioning future interventions for conditions such as spina bifida and even cardiac surgeries in utero.
