Police have launched a manhunt after a 40‑year‑old man was shot dead during a community memorial in Acton, west London, on Friday evening, with no arrests made and a cordon still in place.

The Scene of the Tragedy

The incident unfolded just before 7.50 pm at the junction of Braybrook Street and Erconwald Street in East Acton, where roughly forty to fifty people – including children – had gathered for a memorial service.

The gathering, which attracted around four dozen attendees, was abruptly shattered when gunfire erupted, prompting the London Ambulance Service to attend to the 40‑year‑old victim.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of a man whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence. We understand a large number of people had gathered for a memorial service and what should have been a time to come together in remembrance has instead left a family devastated.” He urged anyone who was in the area between 18:00 and 20:00 to come forward, noting that even the smallest detail could be crucial.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

He added that footage from mobile phones, dashcams, doorbells or social media, as well as observations of suspicious behaviour such as individuals carrying weapons, cyclists acting oddly, or speeding vehicles, would be invaluable.

No arrests have been made and a police cordon remains in place in Braybrook Street. The man’s family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101, quoting CAD 7011/2Oct.

Community Response and Support

The local community is reeling from the loss, with neighbours describing the victim as a dedicated family man who leaves behind a grieving household.

Specialist officers are providing ongoing support to the bereaved family, while vigils and informal gatherings are emerging as residents seek to honour the memory of the man and find solace together.

Why it Matters

The tragedy underscores how acts of violence can erupt in spaces meant for healing and solidarity, casting a shadow over communal attempts to mourn and rebuild. The police appeal for witnesses highlights the critical role of citizen cooperation in solving violent crimes, while the swift mobilisation of emergency services and specialist support reflects the community’s resilience. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for safety in public gatherings and the importance of vigilance in neighbourhoods across the capital.
