A disturbing incident on a beach in St Ives, Cornwall, has prompted police to seek witnesses after a man was reportedly seen violently attacking a seagull. This distressing event, which took place on Wednesday, has drawn significant attention on social media, with many expressing their outrage over the treatment of the bird.

Seagull Incident Shocks Local Community

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the altercation began when the seagull allegedly swooped down in an attempt to snatch food from the man. According to one observer, the individual responded by grabbing the bird and delivering several punches, resulting in severe injuries that left the creature in a state of shock.

A bystander, who later assisted the injured bird, described the scene vividly, stating, “This absolute tool just gripped a seagull and punched it to the point that it’s dying in a corner on the beach, all in front of the whole slipway.” They expressed their dismay at the attack, emphasising that, while seagulls are often viewed as a nuisance, they do not deserve such brutality.

After the incident, the good Samaritan attempted to care for the injured bird, placing it in a quiet area to recover from the trauma. Fortunately, by the end of their shift, the seagull was seen moving about, although it was clear that it had sustained serious injuries, including a notable rupture on its chest. The witness has since urged anyone with CCTV footage to come forward, as it could aid the police investigation.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is illegal to intentionally kill, injure, or capture seagulls, as well as to damage or destroy their nests or eggs. Despite this legal protection, seagulls are frequently regarded as pests, with some politicians in Scotland even calling for a summit to address increasing concerns over their behaviour and the potential dangers they pose.

In light of this incident, Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that they are investigating the matter. They issued a statement seeking witnesses and any possible footage of the assault, noting that they had only received third-hand reports of the event, despite the numerous posts circulating online. “We are appealing for witnesses and footage following a report of a seagull being attacked in St Ives,” they stated, emphasising the need for further information to assist their inquiries.

Community Response and Animal Welfare

The reaction from the local community has been one of shock and disbelief. Social media platforms have been flooded with posts condemning the man’s actions and calling for justice for the injured seagull. Many users have echoed sentiments that, regardless of personal opinions about seagulls, the violence displayed is unacceptable.

Animal welfare advocates have also weighed in, highlighting the importance of compassion towards all creatures, regardless
