A major police operation is under way in Switzerland following a shooting at an outdoor rave that claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman and left five other people wounded.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at the Schachen race track in Aarau, a town situated approximately 46 kilometres west of Zurich. Authorities confirmed the victim was an Italian national, with the Italian Embassy in Bern and the Consulate in Zurich closely monitoring developments.
What Happened at the Race Track
Emergency services were alerted to reports of gunfire at around 02:30 local time, just minutes after music had ceased at the techno event, which had drawn an anticipated crowd of up to 3,500 attendees.
A DJ who had been performing told social media followers the shooting happened “straight after our set”. Another artist, DJ Tekibo, expressed his devastation on Instagram, revealing he had lost a friend in the incident and was “still trying to process what happened”.
One eyewitness told Swiss news outlet Blick he “suddenly heard the gunshots” shortly after 02:30, initially mistaking the sounds for fireworks. He described being instructed to take cover by a man and a woman, the latter of whom was subsequently shot.
Police Investigation and Manhunt
At a Sunday afternoon news conference, police spokesman Bernhard Graser stated officers had “no information about the perpetrator or perpetrators, nor their motive”. He added that authorities believed the shooter or shooters were no longer in the Aarau area.
The organisers, Agency Events AG, issued a statement expressing their shock. Director Olivier Grein said the company was “shaken” and committed to assisting the police inquiry in any way possible.
Investigators have called on witnesses to submit photographs and video footage from the scene. A cordon has been established around the race track, the municipal swimming pool, and adjacent sports field, with members of the public advised to remain clear of the area.
