Alarming Cancer Trends Among Younger Adults
Over the past three decades, the number of cancer diagnoses in individuals under 50 has surged by nearly 80%. In stark terms, early-onset cancer cases rose from 1.82 million in 1990 to approximately 3.26 million in 2019. Concurrently, deaths from cancer among people in their 40s, 30s, and even younger have increased by 27%. These statistics were highlighted at the recent annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago, where researchers presented findings that link poor sleep patterns to this worrying trend.
The studies, conducted by the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, involved health data analysis from over 18 million adults aged 18 to 50 across the United States. Researchers observed a significant correlation between irregular sleep habits and the risk of developing various types of cancers. Notably, individuals under 50 suffering from insomnia were found to be three times more likely to receive a cancer diagnosis within five years.

She stated, “We don’t know exactly why this is yet, but researchers currently believe it may be due to genetics and lifestyle factors. The study’s conclusion that insomnia may be a potential risk factor in early-onset colorectal cancer could go some way to helping us understand the reasons behind this increase. The findings of this study are worth exploring further.”
Dr David Garley, a Bristol-based GP and director of the Better Sleep Clinic, noted the growing interest in how insomnia affects an individual’s risk for various health conditions, including cancer. However, he pointed out that these studies indicate a correlation rather than causation. “It could be that insomnia leads to lifestyle choices that increase cancer risk, such as poor diet or lack of exercise,” he stated. “Conversely, undiagnosed cancer could affect sleep patterns.”
Meanwhile, Megan Winter, a health information manager at Cancer Research UK, reaffirmed the necessity for further long-term studies to evaluate the potential connection between insomnia and specific cancers in younger individuals. Until more definitive conclusions can be drawn, she encourages individuals to adopt healthier lifestyle choices, such as avoiding smoking, maintaining an appropriate weight, and practising sun safety.
