Officials at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) anticipate a notable increase in the number of private aircraft, although they do not expect figures to rival the record-breaking numbers seen during major concerts. With seven matches scheduled to take place in the region this summer, preparations are well underway.
Anticipated Surge in Private Aircraft
Andy Margolis, the Chief Operations Officer at YVR, has noted that the airport typically accommodates between 15 to 25 private planes daily. However, he predicts that this number will rise significantly during the World Cup. Despite this increase, Margolis emphasised that it will not approach the extraordinary 181 private jets that landed at YVR in a single day during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in December 2024. “The World Cup spans several weeks, and I don’t foresee the numbers on either side of the games reaching the levels we saw with Taylor Swift. It’s all manageable within our capacity,” he stated.
Coordination and Planning
All private jets arriving at YVR must pre-book their landing slots through one of three specialised companies operating at the airport. These companies offer a range of luxury amenities, including exclusive hangars and pilot lounges. However, many private pilots typically do not confirm their travel plans until closer to the date, making it challenging to gauge the exact number of arrivals.
Nearby Boundary Bay Airport in Delta, B.C., is also preparing for an uptick in private jet traffic, accepting landings on a first-come, first-served basis. Julia Rieberger, the administrative manager for Alpha Aviation, which oversees operations at Boundary Bay, indicated that they are proactively implementing contingency measures to accommodate additional aircraft. This includes the possibility of helicopter transfers for visitors looking to bypass the lengthy drive to BC Place Stadium, where matches will be held. “We’ve received a lot of inquiries from charter companies and private operators about our pricing, fuel supply, and customs clearance,” Rieberger explained. “However, solid bookings are likely to materialise just 24 to 48 hours in advance of arrivals.”
Historical Context and Future Projections
Nav Canada, responsible for the country’s air traffic management, has been meticulously planning for the anticipated demand due to the World Cup for over a year. Drawing on experiences from previous major events, such as the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the annual Canadian Grand Prix, they are implementing protocols to ensure safe and efficient operations. “Our planning for this summer is informed by the lessons learned from past events, which include coordinating with airlines, airport authorities, and neighbouring airports for overflow traffic,” the agency stated.
Margolis also mentioned that preparations for the World Cup have been ongoing since 2022. While private jet arrivals may surge, the number of commercial flights into Vancouver is expected to remain stable. Still, the airport is bracing for an increase in passenger numbers, with forecasts suggesting a rise of between five to ten per cent daily. “During the summer, we usually see around 80,000 passengers daily. This increase will mainly be from travellers arriving for FIFA-related activities,” he added.
