The recent data will undoubtedly bolster President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election campaign, as protecting the Amazon was one of his core promises during his presidential bid four years ago. The drastic increase in wildfires in 2024 was attributed to a combination of climate extremes and human influence, prompting a national outcry for more robust environmental protections. Vera Arruda, a researcher from the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) and a coordinator at MapBiomas, expressed her cautious optimism: “The 2025 figures are significant and show that it is possible to reduce the burned area in the country.
