The Treatment Trial and Its Goals
The trial, aptly named the Partners treatment trial, will assess two investigational drugs: remdesivir, an antiviral agent developed by Gilead Sciences, and MBP134, a monoclonal antibody created by Mapp Biopharmaceutical. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive one of the drugs, a combination of both, or standard supportive care.
Prof. Laurens Liesenborghs from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, who is involved in the trial, explained, “These two drugs have shown great efficacy in animal models against the Bundibugyo virus. Now, we need to determine if they can lower mortality in humans.” The Bundibugyo strain has a reported fatality rate of approximately one in three, significantly lower than the Zaire strain, yet still a cause for alarm.

Protests among frontline healthcare workers over unpaid wages have further complicated efforts. Ovide Maliabo, a driver for a burial team in Rwampara, described the dangers faced by these workers, stating, “At one point, we narrowly escaped being lynched. It’s a shame that we aren’t being financially supported.”
Additionally, logistical hurdles persist. The closure of the local airport has hindered the transport of essential supplies, including personal protective equipment vital for the safety of healthcare providers.
The Path Ahead
With the trial now underway, scientists are monitoring closely for differences in mortality rates between those receiving experimental treatments and those receiving standard care. The hope is to enrol between 700 and 1,000 participants, with sufficient drug supplies donated for 1,200 patients.
“We always think of risk-benefit,” Liesenborghs noted. “The benefit is potentially very high because you offer a life-saving treatment to someone who has a very high chance of dying.” This trial is not only significant for the immediate region but could also influence global health strategies against Ebola.
Prof. Amanda Rojek from the University of Oxford remarked on the urgency and importance of the trial, stating, “If we look back at West Africa, where it took over a year to start clinical trials during the last major Ebola outbreak, we’re very proud of the team that achieved this in just six weeks.”
