Tensions erupted in Southampton on Tuesday evening as protests escalated following the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Henry Nowak. The unrest led to the arrest of two individuals and left 11 police officers and one police dog injured. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, along with local MPs, condemned the violence, labelling the events as “disgraceful and completely unacceptable”.

The protests began outside a police station in Southampton before moving to the area surrounding the home of Vickrum Digwa, the 23-year-old man convicted of Nowak’s murder. Digwa was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years just a day prior to the demonstrations. The atmosphere quickly turned hostile as protesters clashed with police, who were subjected to missile attacks, including bottles and makeshift weapons.
The protests were ignited by lingering questions regarding the police’s handling of the case, specifically why officers arrested Nowak while he lay gravely injured. Bodycam footage released later showed Nowak, in handcuffs, pleading with officers that he had been stabbed
