The particular cannon used by Brie is manufactured in Spain, and he claims it marks the first such installation in Canada. Brie’s cannon is seamlessly integrated with a weather monitoring system operated by SPAG, a Brazilian firm. Meteorologists continuously observe weather patterns and notify Brie via a WhatsApp group when it’s time to activate the cannon. “Before they start the cannon, they always write to us on their WhatsApp Group to make sure, ‘OK, I’m going to start the cannon in maybe 10 minutes, there’s a storm approaching,'” Brie noted. This proactive communication allows for timely responses to impending storms, as the cannon emits shockwaves every seven seconds to stave off hail.

Despite its potential benefits, the anti-hail cannon is not without its drawbacks, the most notable being the noise it generates. The device produces loud shockwaves, although it is equipped with a metal outer cylinder designed to mitigate the sound. “I’m hopeful my neighbours understand the device is necessary given changing weather conditions due to climate change,” Brie said. He is committed to adapting their farming practices to ensure resilience in the face of increasingly volatile weather.

This summer’s unusual combination of heat and rain has led to a promising apple harvest for Quebec growers. However, Brie insists that having the anti-hail cannon is essential to safeguarding their expected abundant yield. “We are adapting ourselves to make sure that we’re going to be resilient over the years,” he stated.
