French authorities have apprehended five individuals in connection with the abduction of a magistrate and her mother, which unfolded last week in Bourg-lès-Valence. Just over a year ago, in January 2025, David Balland, a prominent figure in the crypto industry and co-founder of the billion-dollar firm Ledger, was kidnapped alongside his partner. The attackers severed his finger and demanded a significant ransom before he was released the following day, with his partner found restrained in a vehicle outside of Paris.

In May of the same year, the father of another cryptocurrency entrepreneur was abducted by armed assailants in Paris, suffering a similar fate. The kidnappers also severed a finger and demanded a ransom in the millions of euros, but he was rescued after 58 hours in a police operation.

Law Enforcement Response

The recent kidnappings have prompted French law enforcement to intensify their efforts to combat such crimes. A massive operation mobilising 160 officers was initiated following the initial ransom demand, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are responding to the threats posed by criminal elements exploiting the increasing wealth associated with cryptocurrencies.
