The Toronto Raptors are gearing up for a pivotal Game 4 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, as they seek to even the series after a decisive victory in Game 3. With the Cavaliers leading the best-of-seven playoff series 2-1, the Raptors are making adjustments both on and off the court, including a shift in their daily routines to accommodate the early afternoon tip-off.

Early Tip-Off Calls for Routine Changes

Brandon Ingram, a key player for the Raptors, acknowledged the need for adjustments in his personal schedule, humourously noting that he plans to turn in early due to the presence of his partner. “Trying to get in the bed earlier today,” Ingram shared after a practice session at Toronto’s OVO Athletic Centre. “My girl’s around so she’ll get on my nerves enough where I just want to go to sleep.”

This early start, with the game set for 1 p.m. ET, presents unique challenges. Jakob Poeltl, the Raptors’ starting centre, expressed uncertainty about how the time change might affect either team. “It might, it might not, but it’s the same for both teams,” he stated. “I don’t think it really matters. We have early games throughout the season every now and then, so everybody should know what it feels like. I think we’re fine.”

Coaching Strategies for Success

Head coach Darko Rajakovic has been proactive in preparing his players for the unconventional schedule. He arranged Saturday’s practice to mirror Sunday’s game time, allowing the team to establish a rhythm for the day ahead. “We’re giving guys 24 hours to get ready until tomorrow,” Rajakovic explained. “We’ve got to focus on things that we’re controlling—our defensive and offensive fundamentals, our culture. That’s the main focus. There is not much you can do regarding your body clock.”

The Raptors displayed a marked improvement in Game 3, bouncing back from consecutive losses with a commanding 126-104 victory. Ingram credited the team’s heightened defensive intensity for the turnaround. “They didn’t make as many shots,” he noted. “We tried to slow down (All-Star guards) Donovan Mitchell and (James) Harden a little bit more… Guys just stepped up. We needed everybody, and everybody was there.”

Injury Update: Quickley Out for Series

In a blow to their playoff aspirations, the Raptors announced that Immanuel Quickley would not return for the remainder of the first-round series due to a right hamstring strain. Quickley had been sidelined for the first three games against Cleveland, and his condition worsened during recent tests. Poeltl expressed disappointment over Quickley’s absence, emphasising his importance as a playmaker. “He’s been somewhat of a staple for me on the court,” Poeltl said. “But now we just got to make the most of what we have. We have a deep team, a lot of guys that can come in and have an impact.”

Quickley had a commendable season, averaging 16.4 points and 5.9 assists in 70 games, making his absence keenly felt. In his place, second-year guard Ja’Kobe Walter started in Game 3, while Jamal Shead had filled the role for the initial two games of the series.

Looking Ahead to Game 4

As the Raptors prepare for this crucial contest, the stakes are high. A victory would not only level the series but also reinvigorate the team’s momentum. The players are aware that every detail counts—from their routines to their defensive strategies. With the home crowd behind them, the Raptors aim to harness the energy of their fans at Scotiabank Arena to propel them towards victory.

Why it Matters

The outcome of Game 4 has significant implications for the Raptors’ playoff journey. A win could shift the series dynamics, providing Toronto with renewed confidence and a chance to regain control. Conversely, a defeat would place them on the brink of elimination, making this match a defining moment in their season. As playoff intensity ramps up, every adjustment, every strategy, and every bit of support from their fanbase could prove crucial in determining the Raptors’ fate.
