As the Toronto Raptors prepare for a pivotal Game 4 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the stakes have never been higher. With the Cavaliers leading the best-of-seven series 2-1, Toronto looks to build on their recent victory and regain momentum in front of a home crowd. The early afternoon tip-off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday will challenge players to adapt to a different routine, particularly for those who cherish their pre-game naps.

Adjustments on and off the Court

For Brandon Ingram, a player well-known for his penchant for resting, this series requires a shift in bedtime habits. “Trying to get in the bed earlier today,” Ingram shared following practice at the OVO Athletic Centre. “My girl’s around so she’ll get on my nerves enough where I just want to go to sleep.”

The change in schedule is part of a broader strategy for the Raptors, who have faced difficulties in the previous games. Starting centre Jakob Poeltl expressed uncertainty about how the early start will impact the game: “It might, it might not, but it’s the same for both teams. I don’t think it really matters. We have early games throughout the season every now and then, so everybody should know what it feels like. I think we’re fine.”

Coaching Strategy and Team Focus

Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic has tailored the team’s practices to align with the early start time. On Saturday, he organised an off-day practice that aimed to help players adjust to the rhythm they will face on Sunday. “We’re giving guys 24 hours to get ready until tomorrow,” Rajakovic explained. “We’ve got to focus on things that we’re controlling. Those are our defensive, offensive fundamentals, our culture. That’s the main focus of it. There is not much you can do regarding your body clock.”

Toronto’s performance in Game 3 showcased their potential to bounce back after consecutive losses. The Raptors delivered a commanding 126-104 victory, with Ingram noting an uptick in defensive aggression. “They didn’t make as many shots. We tried to slow down (All-Star guards) Donovan Mitchell and (James) Harden a little bit more,” he stated. “We just tried to limit Donovan Mitchell’s touches in that game and just make them take tough shots. Guys just stepped up. We needed everybody, and everybody was there.”

Injury Updates and Team Depth

In a blow to the Raptors, guard Immanuel Quickley has been ruled out for the remainder of the series due to a right hamstring strain. Quickley had not participated in the first three games and was making progress in his recovery when he aggravated the injury during testing. Poeltl expressed the team’s desire for Quickley’s swift return, stating, “He’s been somewhat of a staple, at least with me, on the court, for me to play off of. But now we just got to make the most of what we have. We have a deep team. We have a lot of guys that can come in and have an impact on this team. So we just got to go to the next option.”

With Quickley sidelined, second-year guard Ja’Kobe Walter will continue to fill the starting role, having stepped in for Game 3. Jamal Shead also saw action in the first two games of the series, demonstrating the Raptors’ depth in navigating this challenging playoff run.

Why it Matters

The outcome of Game 4 holds significant implications for the Raptors’ playoff aspirations. A win would not only level the series but also restore confidence among the players and fans alike. The challenges of adjusting to an early game, combined with the absence of a key player like Quickley, will test Toronto’s resolve and adaptability. As the team looks to reclaim momentum, the ability to execute their game plan and maintain defensive intensity will be crucial in turning the series around. This matchup is more than just a game; it is a defining moment for a franchise striving to make a deep playoff run.
