In a tightly contested playoff clash, the Toronto Raptors displayed remarkable tenacity, edging past the Cleveland Cavaliers with a 93-89 win on Sunday. The victory not only equalises the best-of-seven series at two games apiece but also exemplifies the Raptors’ grit and determination, a theme emphasised by head coach Darko Rajakovic in his post-match reflections.

Rajakovic’s Lesson in Inat

Following the match, Rajakovic introduced reporters and fans to the Serbian term “inat,” pronounced “ee-nut,” which he described as embodying the spirit of his team. “It’s proving everybody wrong, in spite of everything. That’s the state of our team,” he remarked. “All of our guys have a chip on their shoulder. They’re coming every single day to put in extreme work to play for this city. I would use that word — inat.”

Despite a dismal shooting performance, where the Raptors managed just 31 of 97 field goals (32 per cent) and an abysmal 4 of 30 from beyond the arc (13.3 per cent), they demonstrated an unwavering commitment to defence and rebounding. Rajakovic noted, “It’s the grind and fight that we had, the attention to detail and rebounding the ball, and taking care of the ball, all the stuff that we preach night in and night out that came out in the game. We just never flinched.”

Standout Performances

Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes led the charge for Toronto, each contributing 23 points. Ingram, in particular, had a standout performance, showing resilience after struggling in the previous games. He also added six rebounds and was pivotal in hitting three of the Raptors’ three-pointers.

Barnes, who recorded nine rebounds and six assists, attributed the team’s strong identity to Rajakovic’s influence. However, he downplayed the notion of having a chip on their shoulder, stating, “We’re just trying to go out there and win, take it one possession at a time.”

Rookie centre Collin Murray-Boyles also made a substantial impact off the bench, contributing a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He highlighted the importance of rebounding, stating, “Obviously, we need that more as the series goes on and as we keep playing these really tough games.”

Cavaliers’ Late Push Falls Short

On the other side, Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 20 points, including a strong fourth-quarter showing. His efforts, complemented by James Harden’s 19 points and eight assists, nearly propelled Cleveland to a comeback. Mitchell’s performance included four three-pointers, which equalled the Raptors’ total from the arc.

With the series now tied, expectations have shifted dramatically. Before the series began, simulations from Basketball-Reference.com gave the Raptors only a 26.9 per cent chance of advancing. Yet, with each passing game, Toronto’s resilience has defied those predictions.

Looking Ahead

As the Raptors prepare for Game 5 in Cleveland on Wednesday, both Ingram and his teammates are aware of the challenge ahead. “We’ve got to expect a fight,” he asserted. “Back in their territory, their fans are going to be super loud, bringing the energy, and we’ve got to be ready for Donovan Mitchell to bounce back.”

The stage is set for an intense showdown, with Toronto looking to build on their momentum while Cleveland aims to reclaim home-court advantage.

Why it Matters

This victory is more than just a single game win; it signals a shift in Toronto’s playoff narrative. The Raptors, often underestimated, have showcased their ability to withstand adversity and respond to pressure. As they head into Game 5, the stakes are higher than ever, with both teams eager to seize control of the series. The resilience displayed by the Raptors not only inspires their fans but also sets a tone for their future in the playoffs.
