A unique rescue mission is underway as Rhossi, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, prepares for an extraordinary 5,000-mile journey back to the Gulf of Mexico after being found nearly lifeless on a beach in Wales. A Life-Saving Rescue
Rhossi was discovered in December 2023 on a beach near Rhosneigr, thanks to a vigilant dog named Meg and her owner. The young turtle, less than two years old, was in a severe state of distress, suffering from what conservationists describe as “cold-stunned” due to the frigid waters of the region. The Anglesey Sea Zoo staff have since nursed him back to health, monitoring his progress closely as he regained strength and size, growing from a mere 1 kg (2.2 lbs) to a robust 21 kg (46 lbs).

Matt Davidson, the Anglesey Sea Zoo’s curator, has been deeply involved in preparing for Rhossi’s departure. He noted, “We have to make certain that his skin remains moist throughout the journey. We use KY Jelly—yes, the one associated with personal lubricants—because it is gentle on his eyes.” Davidson and his team have also used Vaseline to prevent Rhossi’s shell from drying out, which could lead to serious health complications.
The Emotional Farewell
As the departure date approaches, the staff at the Anglesey Sea Zoo are grappling with mixed emotions. Rhossi’s care has fostered a deep bond, and the team is acutely aware that they are about to send a piece of their hearts back into the wild. Hobro remarked, “This is what we have been working towards for over two years. It’s incredibly emotional. Soon, a little piece of us will be swimming off into the Caribbean Sea, and we’ll never see him again.”
Kemp’s ridley turtles are critically endangered, with nesting sites limited to just a few beaches in Mexico and Texas. The zoo hopes Rhossi’s successful return to the wild will contribute to the survival of his species, which has faced severe population declines.
