England and Wales are poised to experience their driest July on record, with rainfall levels plummeting to alarming lows. According to the Met Office, as of 30 July, England has recorded a mere 5.6mm of precipitation, a stark 8% of its historical average for the month. This figure falls well short of the previous record low of 13.4mm established in 1911. Wales mirrors this trend, with only 7.9mm of rainfall recorded, also representing just 8% of its long-term monthly average and significantly below the former record of 22.6mm, set over a century ago. As a whole, the UK is on track for its third driest July, the driest since 1868.

Flash Drought Declared Amidst Growing Concerns

The Environment Agency has officially declared a “flash drought” affecting more than half of England and all of Wales. This situation arises as water consumption rates exceed the natural replenishment capabilities of the environment. In Surrey, the town of Wisley has gone without rainfall for an unprecedented 44 consecutive days. While Scotland does not designate drought conditions, it is actively monitoring water scarcity, with some eastern areas classified as experiencing “significant scarcity” by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

These drought conditions have already begun to exert considerable pressure on the landscape, leading to diminished river flows and accelerated harvests. Currently, over 20 million individuals are subject to hosepipe bans as a water conservation measure. The combination of soaring temperatures and insufficient rainfall has created dangerously dry conditions, heightening the risk of wildfires across the region.

Firefighting authorities have been stretched thin as wildfires rage in various parts of England and Scotland. A major incident was reported in Suffolk, where firefighters are battling a blaze spanning approximately 200 football pitches. In Scotland, a wildfire that took hold in the Cairngorms has consumed 10 square miles (25 sq km) of moorland over a two-week period. While Northern Ireland is currently not facing drought conditions, the overall situation across the UK remains critical.

July Heatwave: A Catalyst for Crisis

The month of July has not only brought drought but has also been marked by extreme heat. The Met Office’s preliminary statistics indicate that Wales is on course for its warmest July since records began, while England is likely to experience its joint warmest. While Scotland is not expected to rank among the hottest July months, temperatures across southern England have consistently exceeded averages by 3.2 degrees Celsius.

The UK Health Security Agency estimates that 2023 may record the highest number of heat-related fatalities since tracking began, with approximately 2,877 deaths attributed to heatwaves in May and June—nearly double the total number recorded for the entirety of the previous year. The nation has already experienced seven days with temperatures surpassing 35 degrees Celsius, eclipsing the previous record of five days set in 1976 and matched in 2020. Furthermore, with 31 days registering above 30 degrees Celsius, 2023 is on course to challenge the historical record of 34 days from 1995.
