Record-Breaking Drought Conditions Threaten England and Wales as July Sees Historic Low Rainfall

England and Wales are poised to experience their driest July on record, with rainfall levels plummeting to unprecedented lows. According to the Met Office, England has received a mere 5.6mm of rain up until 30 July, representing just 8% of the long-term average for the month. This figure is less than half of the previous record low of 13.4mm set in 1911. Similarly, Wales has recorded only 7.9mm of rainfall, also 8% of its long-term average, and approximately one-third of the previous record of 22.6mm, similarly established in 1911.

Drought Declared Across Major Regions

The Environment Agency has officially declared a “flash drought” across more than half of England, highlighting a critical situation where water consumption is exceeding natural replenishment rates. As of 30 July, the Surrey town of Wisley has recorded an astonishing 44 consecutive days without any rainfall. Although Scotland has not issued a formal drought declaration, it is actively monitoring water scarcity, with some eastern regions classified as experiencing significant scarcity according to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

The ramifications of these drought conditions are already being felt widely, with considerable impacts on river flow and agricultural yields. Over 20 million residents are currently subject to hosepipe bans aimed at conserving precious water resources. The combination of soaring temperatures and minimal rainfall has created dangerously dry conditions, greatly increasing the risk of wildfires. A major incident has emerged in Suffolk, where firefighters are battling a wildfire that spans an area equivalent to 200 football pitches. Additionally, a fire in the Cairngorms of Scotland has been raging for two weeks, devastating 10 square miles (25 square km) of moorland.

Extreme Temperatures Heighten Concerns

July has not only brought unprecedented dryness but also soaring temperatures, making it one of the hottest months on record across the UK. The Met Office’s preliminary data shows that Wales is on track to experience its highest mean temperature for July, while England is likely to see its joint warmest month. Northern Ireland is also feeling the heat, with July forecast to be its third warmest. Scotland, however, is not expected to see mean temperatures in its top ten for the month.

Although maximum temperatures have not broken records, with a peak of 35.5°C recorded in Wisley on 9 July—well below the 40.3°C record set in 2022—mean temperatures in southern England have surged by 3.2°C above average. The UK Health Security Agency has estimated that this year is on course for the highest number of heat-related fatalities since records began. Between May and June, nearly 2,877 heat-related deaths were recorded, nearly double last year’s total. The country has experienced seven days of temperatures exceeding 35°C, eclipsing the previous record of five days set in 1976 and matched in 2020.
