Record Heatwaves in England and Wales Linked to Over 2,700 Deaths in May and June

Recent estimates suggest that the unprecedented heatwaves experienced in England and Wales during May and June may have resulted in more than 2,700 fatalities attributed to heat-related conditions. A collaborative study conducted by experts from Imperial College London, the Met Office, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine highlights the significant risks posed by extreme temperatures, particularly during the record-breaking heat experienced in June.

A Historic Heatwave

June 2026 was marked by extraordinary temperatures, with the highest recorded reaching 37.7°C (99.9°F) in Lingwood, Norfolk. This scorching heat shattered the previous record of 35.6°C set in 1957. The warm weather prompted the issuance of a rare red heat alert across several regions, indicating a serious risk to public health even for those without pre-existing conditions.

The study reveals that approximately 550 deaths were linked to the heat from 21 to 29 May, while nearly 2,200 occurred between 18 and 28 June, coinciding with the peak of the heatwave. In May, the UK recorded its highest temperature of 35.1°C at Kew Gardens on the 26th, surpassing a long-standing record of 32.8°C from 1922.

The Causes of Extreme Heat

Both heatwaves were attributed to a phenomenon known as a “heat dome”, which is essentially a stagnant area of high pressure that traps warm air in a specific region. Researchers assert that human-induced climate change has exacerbated these conditions, contributing to an average temperature increase of approximately 1.4°C since the pre-industrial era. This warming has been suggested to elevate maximum temperatures during the recent heatwaves by an additional 3 to 4°C.

The high temperatures were further intensified by humid conditions, which made it difficult for the human body to regulate heat through sweating. Experts warn that the effects of extreme heat can be detrimental to anyone, including those in good health, as its symptoms can often be mistaken for less severe ailments.

Vulnerable Populations at Risk

The health impacts of prolonged exposure to extreme heat are particularly pronounced among vulnerable groups, including infants, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Increased temperatures can lead to a heightened risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes. The strain on the body during such extreme conditions can be exacerbated by dehydration, leading to even further complications.

Professor Fredi Otto, a climate scientist involved in the research, emphasised the importance of recognising these risks, stating, “Don’t underestimate the risks. Just because you’re fit and healthy, you’re not safe.”

Tragically, personal accounts from experts highlight the serious consequences of extreme heat. Professor Emily Shuckburgh, Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, shared the devastating loss of her father to a stroke during the heatwave, noting that the overwhelming demand on ambulance services during this period may have contributed to the tragedy.

Preparing for Future Heatwaves

The study’s findings are based on historical death records, modelling potential outcomes from the recent heatwaves. Though the estimates are alarming, they serve as a crucial reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather. Dr Clair Barnes, a researcher at Imperial College London, expressed hope that raising awareness of these risks will encourage individuals to take preventive measures during future heat events.

While predictions for heat-related deaths in 2025 were significantly lower than anticipated, the potential for increased fatalities remains a pressing concern. Experts warn that if current trends continue, heat-related deaths in parts of northern Europe could rival those caused by cold weather within a few decades. This grim forecast is contingent upon the world’s ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to changing climate conditions.
