In Flintshire, farmer Elen Hughes reported that her family’s fields are “bone dry,” stating they had to resort to feeding their livestock silage due to the lack of grass.
Abi Reader, president of NFU Cymru, added that both livestock and crop farmers are facing unprecedented challenges. The combined pressure of excessive heat and dry weather has forced many crops to mature much earlier than usual, leading to lower yields.
Welsh Water has clarified that its drought declarations differ from NRW’s environmental classifications. The company has already implemented a hosepipe ban affecting 33,000 properties in west Wales, driven by local water demand and the capacity of treatment works.
