Chiba, the prefecture adjacent to Tokyo, experienced a staggering 360mm of rain within just 24 hours, with Chiba City alone recording 115mm in a single hour—setting a record for the area. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest-level heavy rainfall warnings, a first for over a dozen municipalities in the region. Although the warnings were downgraded the following day as conditions slightly improved, meteorologists are predicting further rainfall.

In response to the crisis, Japan’s Ground Self Defence Force has been deployed to assist with relief efforts.

Footage from public broadcaster NHK depicted alarming scenes of water surging violently from maintenance holes, surpassing the height of five-storey buildings in central Chiba. Over 80 homes have been inundated, and nearly 230,000 residents have been advised to evacuate for their safety. As of Friday morning, approximately 23,000 households were without power, a significant decrease from the initial 68,000 reported earlier.
