In a profound loss for the fashion world, the legendary Italian designer Valentino Garavani has passed away at the age of 93. Valentino, whose eponymous label became synonymous with opulence, elegance, and timeless glamour, left an indelible mark on the industry he helped shape.

Valentino’s journey began in 1932 in the town of Voghera, near Milan, where he was born and named after the iconic Italian actor Rudolph Valentino. His early experiences, such as a visit to the opera where he was captivated by the sea of red dresses, would go on to inspire his signature aesthetic.

After apprenticing with renowned designers like Jean Desses, Christian Dior, and Guy Laroche, Valentino established his own label in 1959 at the age of 27, with the financial backing of his family. It was in 1962 that his all-white collection brought him to the forefront of the fashion world, cementing his status as a rising star.

Valentino’s partnership with Giancarlo Giammetti, both in business and life, proved pivotal to the brand’s global success. Together, they ensured that Valentino’s creations were adorned by a legion of famous devotees, from Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor to Princess Diana and Julia Roberts.

The designer’s signature red dress, a hue now officially recognized by Pantone, became a hallmark of the Valentino aesthetic. His ability to capture the essence of Italian glamour and elegance earned him a devoted following, with models and celebrities regularly wearing his designs on and off the catwalk.

Valentino’s retirement in 2007, after a final haute couture show where every model wore a red dress, marked the end of an era. However, his legacy continued to inspire the next generation of designers who took the helm of his eponymous label, including Alessandra Facchinetti, Pierpaolo Piccioli, and most recently, Alessandro Michele.

In a tribute, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni aptly described Valentino as the “undisputed master of style and elegance, and an eternal symbol of Italian high fashion.” His passing is a profound loss, but his indelible mark on the industry and the enduring impact of his creations will ensure that Valentino’s legacy lives on.
