In a heartwarming yet concerning tale from south Edmonton, a Cayuga duck named Buddy has taken up residence at Lake Summerside, far from his natural habitat. Buddy’s Arrival
Buddy has been living at the man-made Lake Summerside for approximately three months. Initially, his arrival went unnoticed, but it became apparent that he was not just another local duck species when he became entangled in a fishing lure. Kim Livingston, the office manager at the Lake Summerside Residents Association, noted that despite Buddy’s good health and cheerful disposition, his presence in the area is not ideal. “He seems pretty happy, he seems pretty healthy,” she remarked, “He’s a big boy.”
Local wildlife rescue agency Wild North was contacted for assistance when Buddy’s predicament became known. However, the organisation informed Livingston that they could not provide help, as Buddy is a domestic breed, specifically a Cayuga duck, which is not native to the region.
The Challenges of Domestic Ducks
Cayuga ducks, developed in New York State during the 19th century, are known for their resilience in colder weather. Yet, Buddy’s inability to fly, combined with Alberta’s harsh winters, poses a serious threat to his survival. “He can’t take off from here, so he’s stuck,” Livingston explained. “Not only will he not survive in the winter without shelter, but he’s also not getting the proper nutrition from foraging in the lake.”
Despite being fed waterfowl food three times daily by well-meaning residents, this short-term solution is insufficient for Buddy’s long-term health and safety.
A New Home Awaits
Fortunately, a new owner has been identified who has experience caring for ducks and geese, providing a potential safe haven for Buddy. However, persuading him to leave the lake has proven to be a challenge. “We’ve tried catching Buddy, but he always ducks away whenever we get close,” said Livingston, highlighting the difficulties in their efforts to relocate him. “We spent about two hours trying to catch him. He outsmarted us every time.”
To assist in this delicate process, a professional bird catcher is scheduled to arrive soon, aiming to safely coax Buddy from the lake and into a more suitable environment.
