Buddy, an unusual resident of Lake Summerside in southeast Edmonton, has captured the hearts of locals as he navigates life far from his native habitat. This Cayuga duck, identifiable by his striking dark green head and iridescent blue sheen, has been thriving at the man-made lake for approximately three months. However, his presence raises concerns about his well-being and the challenges he faces in a harsh Canadian winter.
Buddy’s Journey to Lake Summerside
Buddy arrived at Lake Summerside seemingly without complications, much to the delight of local residents. Kim Livingston, office manager at the Lake Summerside Residents Association, described him as a “big boy” who appears healthy and content. However, the situation took a worrying turn when Buddy became ensnared in a fishing lure, prompting Livingston to seek help from local wildlife rescue.
“I contacted Wild North to see if they could assist him,” said Livingston, who was particularly concerned about the hook lodged in Buddy’s bill. Unfortunately, the rescue organisation informed her that they were unable to help due to Buddy being a domestic duck.
The Challenges of Domestic Ducks in the Wild
Cayuga ducks, originally bred in New York between the 1830s and 1850s, are known for their hardiness and ability to withstand cold weather. Despite this resilience, Buddy’s inability to fly poses significant risks, particularly as the colder months approach. “He can’t take off from here, so he’s stuck,” Livingston explained.
The duck’s attempts to forage for food in the lake are insufficient for his nutritional needs. While he is currently being fed waterfowl pellets three times a day, this is merely a stopgap measure. “He won’t survive winter without proper shelter, and foraging alone isn’t providing him with the right nutrition,” she added.
Attempts to Relocate Buddy
Recognising the urgency of the situation, a new owner has been identified for Buddy, who already has other ducks and geese. The next challenge lies in persuading Buddy to leave his lakeside home. Despite numerous attempts to catch him, he has proven elusive. “We spent about two hours trying to catch him, but he outsmarted us every time,” Livingston admitted.
To aid in the effort, an expert bird catcher is scheduled to assist over the weekend, bringing hope that Buddy can soon be relocated to a safer environment where he can thrive alongside his own kind.
