Erick Thompson, a representative from the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, confirmed on Wednesday that the process of returning home is fraught with uncertainty for many. “Not everyone has a home to go back to,” he noted, highlighting the varying experiences of residents as they navigate their return. The Bald Range fire has ravaged approximately 150 structures, with around 110 in the nearby communities of Faulder and Meadow Valley, and an additional 40 within Summerland itself.
During a recent tour of the affected areas, Thompson observed “serious damage” to rural landscapes outside Summerland, a sight that was both sobering and alarming. “You can really sense how terrifying it must have been for those who lived through it,” he reflected, emphasising the profound impact of the wildfire on the community.
The Aftermath and Ongoing Risks
As residents return, they are confronted with the remnants of the wildfire’s wrath: the acrid smell of smoke, dust, ash, and in some cases, spoiled food left behind due to the swift evacuation. “It was heartbreaking to see the homes that had been destroyed,” Thompson admitted, expressing the deep sorrow felt by many.
Despite the devastation, there were moments of hope. Thompson praised the tireless efforts of firefighters and structural protection teams who managed to defend several homes from the advancing flames. “The fire surged down the hill and reached the backyards of some houses, but those homes were saved,” he recounted, though he simultaneously acknowledged the fire’s ferocity. The blaze, described as a “monster,” developed rapidly, forcing first responders to shift their focus from containment to community safety.
This week, more than 4,500 properties in Summerland were removed from the evacuation order, allowing residents to return home, albeit under an evacuation alert. However, others remain displaced as crews continue to assess risks and restore power infrastructure. Thompson noted the presence of burned hydro poles and precarious “danger trees” that must be removed before certain areas can be deemed safe for residents to re-enter.
Ongoing Fire Management Efforts
As of Wednesday, the Bald Range fire has consumed approximately 227 square kilometres, with the eastern flank—closest to Summerland—showing signs of stabilisation that have permitted some residents to return. However, the BC Wildfire Service cautioned that the fire remains active, with sparks igniting up to 30 metres beyond its main perimeter. Crews are currently engaged along the Princeton-Summerland Road corridor and the southwestern edge of the fire.
The forecast poses additional challenges, with high temperatures and unpredictable winds complicating suppression efforts. The dry conditions are exacerbated by a mere 1.8 millimetres of rain over the past 47 days, leaving the environment alarmingly parched. Residents should expect to see lingering smoke and smouldering ground fires within the fire’s perimeter in the weeks ahead—a typical scenario following significant wildfires, though not usually a cause for concern.
Currently, the Bald Range fire is among approximately 130 active wildfires across British Columbia, with a significant number burning uncontrollably, primarily in the southern regions of the province.
