Calgary’s iconic Stephen Avenue has undergone significant renovations aimed at revitalising the area and drawing visitors back to the downtown core. With enhancements including new trees, seating, lighting, and upgraded infrastructure, the city launched its “See You on Stephen Avenue” campaign on Wednesday to promote dining and shopping in this historic pedestrian thoroughfare.

A Historic Transformation

For nearly a century and a half, Stephen Avenue has served as a vibrant hub of community and commerce in Calgary. Mayor Jeromy Farkas emphasised the importance of this revitalisation project during Wednesday’s announcement, stating, “This project represents the next hundred years, and as our city grows to welcome two million people, three million people and more, when we look around today, we see the foundations of that story.” The renovations are intended not only to beautify the space but also to ensure its relevance in the face of population growth.

Despite its prime location, certain segments of Stephen Avenue have suffered from public safety concerns and social disorder, which has kept potential visitors at bay. As one local, Andrea Beauchamp, noted, “If they cleaned it up… it would bring more people here. I think a lot of people avoid the area because of some things.”

Addressing Safety Concerns

The challenges facing Stephen Avenue are not taken lightly. Calgary’s Chief of Police, Katie McLellan, acknowledged the need for improved safety measures. “For a downtown to thrive, people need to feel safe,” she asserted. In response to ongoing crime and disorder, the Calgary Police Service initiated “Operation Restore” on June 25. This high-visibility operation targets Stephen Avenue and the East Village, areas identified as hotspots for such issues.

McLellan detailed the operation’s progress: “Since the operation began up to mid-July, officers assigned to these areas have responded to more than 2,500 calls for service, conducted 471 business visits, and connected vulnerable individuals with social support on 829 occasions.” These statistics demonstrate a proactive approach to restoring public confidence in the downtown area.

Community Support and Engagement

The launch of the “See You on Stephen Avenue” campaign coincided with the reopening of the Stephen Avenue Safety Hub. This facility serves as a base for police and support agencies like Alpha House, focusing on outreach and assistance for vulnerable populations. McLellan noted that local businesses have already reported positive feedback regarding the increased police visibility and community engagement.

“It’s a bit early to tell, but the feedback that I have received from several people through phone calls and through meet and greets has been positive,” she stated. This collaborative effort aims not only to address enforcement issues but also to foster a supportive environment for those in need.

Why it Matters

The revitalisation of Stephen Avenue is critical for Calgary’s downtown resurgence, particularly as the city anticipates significant population growth. By enhancing the area’s aesthetic appeal while simultaneously addressing safety concerns, officials hope to restore the avenue’s status as a vibrant gathering place for residents and tourists alike. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to creating a welcoming urban environment, essential for the city’s economic vitality and community well-being.
