CreateMe’s technology could change this landscape dramatically. Myers states that if even 10% of t-shirt production were to return to the US, it would mark a significant industry shift. “We can use cotton, we can use wool, we can use leather,” he explains, indicating the versatility of their adhesive-based process.
The adhesive used by CreateMe is thermoset, which ensures that garments maintain their integrity even after repeated washing or ironing. By eliminating seams from the manufacturing process, their clothing can be produced on moulds that fit the human body perfectly, leading to a more streamlined product.

Feichtinger’s study highlights the pressing need to rethink textile manufacturing, as the industry currently generates an astounding 92 million tonnes of waste each year, with vast amounts of unsold clothing ending up in landfills. By re-shoring manufacturing, the environmental benefits could be substantial, although challenges remain in areas like dyeing and yarn production that may not be as easily automated.

Michael Fraede, co-founder of Robotextile, notes that the market for automation in Europe may initially be limited to niche products rather than mass-market garments. “It will take 10 more years before we see the first actions of re-shoring,” he advises, indicating the current industry mindset focused on cost-cutting.
Despite these hurdles, there is a growing sense of optimism. Lauren Junestrand from the UK Fashion and Textile Association believes that the UK has immense potential to incorporate robotics into its garment-making processes. However, she acknowledges that competing with Asian manufacturers on volume will be challenging, leading to a more co-existent relationship between traditional and automated production methods.
