The European packaging industry is on the cusp of a transformative shift as new technologies emerge to eliminate adhesives from paper products. With regulatory pressures mounting, including upcoming requirements for recycling and sustainability, companies are innovating to address the challenges posed by traditional sealing methods. The development of adhesive-free packaging could not only enhance the recyclability of paper but also revolutionise the way manufacturers approach product design and consumer convenience.
The Recycling Dilemma: Adhesives and Their Impact
Despite paper being one of the most recycled materials in Europe—boasting a recycling rate of approximately 74% in 2024—the presence of non-recyclable adhesives, commonly referred to as “stickies,” presents significant complications. According to researchers from North Carolina State University, these adhesives can damage recycling machinery and degrade the quality of recycled paper, leading to rejections of entire batches. As European authorities push for stricter recycling targets—mandating a minimum of 70% recyclability by 2030, increasing to 80% by 2038—addressing the issue of adhesives has become paramount.
Innovations in adhesive technology are emerging as potential solutions. One promising avenue is the development of water-soluble adhesives designed specifically for easier recycling. Yet, the question remains: what if packaging could be created without any adhesive at all?
Pioneering Technology: Laser Sealing Innovations
Three German companies—Fraunhofer, Hermann Ultraschall, and Henkel—are embarking on a groundbreaking project to develop adhesive-free paper sealing technologies. The Fraunhofer Institute has initiated the PAPURE project, set to conclude in September 2023, which focuses on a laser-based heating process that can seal paper packaging without the need for adhesives. Group leader Fabian Kayatz expressed optimism about the project’s potential, stating, “There are not really many paper sealing technologies without any foreign materials, so it’s a great technology and we feel it’s likely that we can bring it to market.”
Meanwhile, Hermann Ultraschall has acquired rights to a patented ultrasonic sealing technology, which operates similarly to welding. Michael Baumann, the firm’s head of business development, noted that discussions are underway with major industry players to transition this technology into mass production. “One customer told me this is an innovation they have never seen before,” he remarked.
Navigating Challenges: Machinery and Material Compatibility
While the prospects for adhesive-free packaging are exciting, significant hurdles remain. Transitioning from conventional adhesive methods to these new technologies will necessitate substantial investments in machinery upgrades, as existing equipment is primarily designed for adhesive applications. Baumann acknowledged this challenge, stating, “Some kind of redesign is probably necessary, and this is our biggest challenge.”
Moreover, the current production speeds of these new sealing methods are slower compared to traditional adhesive processes. However, Fraunhofer’s researchers believe that by integrating the laser technology into existing machinery, production rates can be improved. Yet, not all paper types are suitable for these new sealing technologies, creating a need for collaboration with paper manufacturers to optimise raw materials for adhesive-free bonding.
The Food Packaging Conundrum
An additional layer of complexity arises when considering food-grade packaging. While Fraunhofer and Hermann Ultraschall focus on general paper sealing technologies, Henkel has taken the lead in developing a cold seal solution that works effectively with barrier-coated paper, a crucial component for food products. This innovation allows for secure packaging without compromising the recyclability of the paper. Dr. Arianna Savini from Henkel’s adhesive technologies division explained, “This is really a system shift. You need to engage with all the players in the supply chain to enable this change.”
As the industry progresses towards more sustainable packaging solutions, experts like Jamie Stone from PA Consulting highlight the intricate nature of combining recyclable paper with compatible sealants. He emphasised that the success of these innovations relies on the ability to create secure and effective barriers that do not hinder the recycling process.
