A troubling discovery has emerged from the depths of several national parks in the United States, as researchers have identified the presence of Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.” This alarming organism has been detected in recreational waters across the western United States, raising serious health concerns for millions of visitors enjoying these natural treasures during the summer season.

Recent Findings in National Parks

The U.S. Geological Survey, alongside partner agencies, conducted a comprehensive analysis of 185 water samples taken from renowned sites including Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Olympic National Park, Newberry National Volcanic Monument, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The results revealed that approximately one-third of these samples tested positive for the deadly amoeba. Specifically, Lake Mead, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone exhibited the highest levels of contamination. With millions flocking to these parks in the past year, the findings underscore the importance of public awareness regarding water safety.

Understanding the Risks of Naegleria fowleri

Dr. Lyssette Cardona, an infectious disease specialist from Cleveland Clinic Florida, offers crucial insights into the nature of Naegleria fowleri. This microscopic amoeba thrives in warm freshwater environments, such as lakes and rivers, and can also be found in inadequately maintained swimming pools. Infections predominantly occur when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, leading to a severe condition known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

The symptoms of PAM can escalate rapidly, ranging from fever and nausea to confusion and seizures. Alarmingly, nearly 97 percent of individuals diagnosed with PAM succumb to the infection, often within a few days of symptom onset. Between 1962 and 2024, the U.S. recorded 167 cases, predominantly affecting young males, with only four reported survivors. While the overall incidence is low, typically fewer than ten cases per year, the deadly potential of this organism cannot be overstated.

Precautionary Measures to Stay Safe

As summer approaches, experts stress the importance of taking proactive measures to safeguard against exposure. Dr. Cardona advises avoiding submerging the head in freshwater, especially in hot springs, and suggests holding one’s nose before diving into lakes or rivers. Fortunately, it is essential to note that the amoeba cannot be contracted from swallowing contaminated water, nor does it spread through water vapour or aerosol droplets. Public swimming pools that are properly cleaned and maintained are also safe from the risk of PAM.

The CDC reports that rising air temperatures lead to warmer water temperatures in lakes and ponds, creating an ideal environment for the amoeba to thrive. Over time, this has resulted in the organism migrating northward, with infections previously confined to the southern U.S. now being reported as far north as Minnesota.
